Dear Friends,
I know PagodaFest Chicago 2023 was a big success and is only just behind us. Many of us also still fondly remember the 60th anniversary in Nuremberg. However, many people remarked that we should not skip our bi-annual European Event.
So we have block-reserved rooms for 30 cars (60 people) in the Parc Hotel Alvisse (https://www.parc-hotel.lu/en/home) in Luxembourg. A 4 star hotel with parking, spa facilities and availability of private function rooms for our group.
The dates we have chosen are: arrival Thursday 26th Sep 2024, departure Sunday 29th Sep 2024. The traditional weekend we have been using for the last few years. Now Luxembourg is a little north of the places we visited the last few events, but the weather in that weekend has been very nice: not too hot but still sunny. However, we cannot guarantee no rain.
Luxembourg is very central in Europe, easy to reach from most countries in a 1 or 2 day trip. It offers beautiful roads, sightseeing and possible excursions into the Eiffel or the Alsace area. And, also important: Luxembourg offers the lowest prices in Europe for that exclusive but essential amenity: 98 Super petrol.
The organisers shall plan excursions, routes, and other practicalities. Expect some beautiful roads, views and challenging navigation exercises… Depending on the number of participants we may or may not plan group lunches. Anyway, reserve your place and we will keep you informed.
Note: to reserve your place, you need to pay a € 500 downpayment (expected to be a little less than half the total cost) to Peter van Es, IBAN NL31 INGB 0005391304, BIC: INGBNL2A.
Alternatively, pay that amount to my PayPal account: vanesp@escurio.com but do ensure you cover all costs, so that I receive the full € 500. At the same time send me a mail with your and your co-driver’s details.
You will be able to cancel (and receive a full refund) up until 30th of March 2024. After that date cancellation will only be possible at a cost or if we can use your place for someone else. Note: as always, priority will be given to Full Members of the Group.
Full details will be published in due course.

You could get a rental car locally or find a member who needs a co-driver... besides, for the European events in Nice, Meran, Austria quite a few members drove more than 1000 km's there and back... it's a great way to get to know your car!

Downpayment transferred.

Good afternoon all,
For those of you travelling to the event from the UK, will you be departing early Thursday morning or a more leisurely drive on Wednesday with an overnight stop?
Having not driven to that region before I’d appreciate any help or tips you may be willing to give.
Thanks in advance
Mike
-
I have driven to Luxembourg in rain same day with pagoda but this time we will be stopping half way (not decided yet where) for a night and get going next morning.

Visit Bruges for a stop-over... or, if you are interested in WW I, visit some of the sites in Belgium (https://www.travelawaits.com/2551772/world-war-i-sites-to-visit-in-flanders/)
-
Can recommend a stop here too. About 20 minutes off the A26 near Calais
https://lacoupole-france.com/en/
-
Hi everyone
I think Mike was referring more as to where one might stay overnight?
Any recommendations?
Katie
-
It may be good to look for a hotel just after the French Belgian border crossing, that’s where I live. It takes about 4h15 min from here to Luxembourg.
Everything between Depanne and Brugge would do. If you like specific hotel recommendations let me know what you like. Fancy or something simple. But nice one is notary house in diksmuide. In depanne is there an ibis. And in koksijde and nieuwpoort are there a few. I know notary house has a good safe parking. We could get together and drive together. Happy to give more tips. If you can make some time, get of the Calais train or ferry and drive to cape blanc nez. Beautiful short ocean drive and you’ll see England at nice weather. My favorite destination.

-
Thanks for your reply Sully, much appreciated.
We’re travelling down in tandem with Katie (Merc Girl) as we’re both from Surrey. Our initial plan is to travel on the Wednesday too with an overnight stop.
I see some others have made some helpful suggestions re route and hotels so we’re going to investigate those
Mike
-
Pascal,
Thank you so much for the advice and the links to the hotels. These are very helpful.
I’ll have a chat with Katie as we’ll be travelling in tandem with her. Would be nice to get a little group of us driving down together.
All the best
Mike

Hi Mike,
Agree, that would be nice to drive together in a little group.

Hi Peter,
Do you know yet when the second / final payment for the trip will be become due ?
Many thanks.
-
Time for a little update:
- we've had a few changes on the list of attendees, people dropped off and people from the reserve list joined
- only a couple of weeks ago we paid a downpayment to confirm all reserved hotel rooms, and we arranged banqueting rooms, dinners and drinks packages. A downpayment for that was paid too...
- the total hotel and event cost surpasses the amount all of you prepaid, but not by a lot. Luxembourg is a little more cost effective than our previous events
- we are now planning the detail of the event during the days, lunches, outings, and incurring some costs for the organisation
- I think when we finalise all of these details we'll ask for a final payment but I imagine we don't need to ask for that until july, as the final hotel payment will not be due until just before the event
- we will be communicating with you in a couple of weeks again to ask you some details about your participation for the event... watch your mailbox

Good afternoon all,
Any final updates to the Pagoda European event?
I realise it must be time-consuming and exhausting, however, I just thought I should check in as the anticipation and the excitement is driving me bonkers. 😊
Have a wonderful weekend.

And we certainly don't want any bonkers Pagoda-ites out there!

Hi,
although I cannot take part in this year's Euro event, I would like to highly recommend (before or after) a visit to the not far away (<50 km) city of Trier, the oldest city in Germany and the former capital of the Roman Empire: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Trier
...Wolfgang
-
Ooh, thanks for the heads up, we’ll take a look on map to see where it is in relation to our route
Someone also suggested visiting Waterloo as apparently a great museum etc there? Not sure if anyone else been there? Would be interested in feedback if they have been ☺️
-
All attendees have been sent further instructions (including payment instructions).
Please also check your spam box if you have not received these...

Yes, I went there last year on my way home from the Pagoda Rally in Nuremberg. The Waterloo Museum is BRILLIANT!!!
My son and I stayed at the Van Der Valk Hotel in Waterloo, which was very comfortable with a good restaurant (but not cheap...).
Also, if you go to Trier, try the Karl Marx Museum as Trier is his birthplace.
-
Any of the UK participants leaving on Wednesday for the trek to Luxembourg? Looking to convoy together with someone(s) through the channel tunnel.
-
Hi Tom,
Yes myself and Lee are leaving Wednesday 25th, catching Le Shuttle at Folkestone at 10.16 local time drive 11.51 Calais, driving down to Reims for a stopover and on to Luxembourg Thursday.
Staying at Au close du Lac, Gueux just outside of Reims near to the old motor racing circuit.
Your more than welcome to join us.
Will you be in a Pagoda ?
Ray.

We didn't get to that museum as we spent a lot of time here https://www.waterloo1815.be/en/ before we had to leave to drive back to euro-tunnel at Calais. This museum is at the actual site of the battle, and as a history buff I found the whole visit really interesting, as did my then 15 year-old son. it's well worth a visit.
-
Ray,
Thanks for the PM chat and I’m booked at your time on the Le Shuttle. Will send PM for more details.

Morning All,
Do we know, approx, how many Pagodas will be on the trip?
Jai and myself v much looking forward to seeing everyone again and meeting new friends :)
-
Go with 30-odd
-
That’s a good number :)
-
The forecast for Luxembourg is not as sunny as we want it . Could well be become a hard-top weekend . :)
-
I agree Rick, with current forecast it’s hardtop weather.
For to final decision I will wait a few day, hopefully It improves a bit.
-
Already have it on....
Paul and Dolly
-
It’s a shame but the forecast is looking terrible.
Saturday is looking good though.
-
The forecast is indeed not very encouraging. In order to jinkx it I'm leaving my hardtop at home...

We’re already on the road with soft top only. Currently in Namur , yesterday in Ypres and attended the last post under the Menen Gate. We have nice enough weather and some showers but not to bad. See you soon.

-
Pascal how is Namur? We may stop off there ?
-
We like it , we stay at Château de Namur, there is a safe enough parking and the student trained restaurant is really good.
Location is nice . It can be the last stop before Luxembourg if you take the freeway. We take the inner roads what’s more pleasant eland relaxing . Our next stop will be Bastogne .
-
Lovely - might well give it a go - Thankyou
-
We are leaving tomorrow early morning, shopping in Lille staying overnight and then working our way into Belgium and then following the river Meuse staying again somewhere overlooking the river.
See you all soon.

Gorgeous weather in Namur. 👍
-
For the ones planning to drive through the Belgian Ardennes , Durbuy is a nice stop .
-
That's where Karin and I are staying tomorrow night.... Durbuy: https://ardennen.nl/steden/durbuy/
-
Who was it driving through Bruges yesterday afternoon (license plate:xxxYUP)?
-
Nuf said ….
-
Horrible weather today.... but, I was reminded of the drive to the European Event in 2018 (Provence -- in the same week) through Metz... I had to wade through flooded streets with the Pagoda.
And I decided to put the hardtop on after all... much more light, and less noise... and the car looks good also. And I'm sure it'll jinkx the weather to become nice.
First stop in Durbuy. Figure out what car is one car over on the left of mine....
Peter
-
Well, if the weather is too bad, the hotel has two bowling lanes. What's not to like?
-
Bowling? With all the great roads you and I have selected… no way.
In our hotel (the Sanglier in Durbuy) I found this book… cover shows that Pagodas have been visiting this town in all ages…
-
Here are three beauties tucked away out of the rain (for now).
-
Cloudy and damp for Merano departure! The trunk (boot) is well loaded as usual.
Peter and I are looking forward to seeing all!

We stayed at the Chateau de Namur in 2022 on our way to the MBIG-DE Ponton Rally on the Rhine, very nice hotel and area around it.

On our way
-
Attendees may recall Peter mentioning a Track Day at Spa on Sunday ;D
-
That's why you left so early... respectable speed that...
Here some preliminary shots...
-
And some more... Note the gathering around Peter's (Suedtiroler (https://www.sl113.org/forums/index.php?action=profile;u=13167)'s) car when he has the traditional boot full of Käse, Speck and Wein with him... (see last photo on the previous post).

I assume that means you didn’t like my hot-smoked salmon? ;) (To be fair, you do have to go some to beat Peter’s salami and Parmesan.)
-
I did like your hot smoked salmon but did not drink that weird Kombucha you brought...
-
Very sensibly, neither did anyone else. It was rank.
But was a driver-friendly beverage before our wine-tasting.
-
James & Peter (and those that helped you)
Thanks for a great event with fantastic stops, routes, meals and company. Not easy to pull off. Nicely done!
Much appreciated.
-
And thank you Peter for all the time, effort and dedication that you have devoted to organising these events for so many years now.
At last, you will hopefully be able to just turn up and enjoy future events now, just like the rest of us.
-
Christel, my wife and I were "first timers" and this is definitely something we will repeat.
It was great, thank you very much for all the great preparations, and we met super nice Pagoda folks.
-
We, Petra and I thank Peter and James for the exelent organisation of the tour. The lunch with wine tasting was very good and the castle of Vianden impressive restored. In my youth I saw the castle several times as a ruin.

Some more images.

I thanked our talented organizers in person but a public thanks is due. Take a bow Peter and James!
If there were unnamed helpers in the background a big thanks to them also. The accommodations, food and drink were excellent but the driving destinations and route planning were tops.
In spite of some dicey weather the event was a grand success!
