Title: The 1970 280SL I restored now offered on BaT
Post by: afeustel on March 17, 2024, 19:14:41
Hi all.

After multiple years of work I am now selling the 1970 280SL I restored.  I realize the car is not all original but hopefully it will appeal to a few folks. Thanks to those on the forum who helped to answer my questions over the years.

Please see the listing on BaT:
https://bringatrailer.com/listing/1970-mercedes-benz-280sl-125/

Might be fun to watch as well even if not in the market.

Hopefully it is ok to post the car in this section, happy to have it moved per forum guidlines if needed.

Regards,
Drew

Drew,
Congrats on a fabulous restoration, car looks awesome and well worth all those hours. Love the 15 inch wheel choice! Judging by this week’s white ‘68 4-speed sale on BAT,  you should do just fine with yours….I’m sure most of our members will be watching…..best of luck!

Thanks for the support Bill.

This forum was invaluable for me throughout the process. I love that a resource like this exists. Makes a lot of things DIY possible that would not have been otherwise.

The car looks great and should do very welll!
How did you get the color matched housing for the AC unit? That looks so much better than our standard black.

Thank you John.

I had my interior guy wrap the lower pad in matching leather. I had seen it done on some other restorations and felt it allowed the interior to blend better.

Drew

Best of luck with the auction, lots of interest I saw. I had not registered you were a member here and entered one comment on the wheel size and lowered springs. Beautiful car otherwise, should do very well.

Greetings, Drew. Interior looks great in the Cognac you chose. Can you please tell me where you sourced the cognac material from, and if possible the material number.  Awesome rebuild you did.  All the best to you with your auction. Cheers and God Bless.  JohnnyC.

Hello @JohnnyC

I had my interior guy order it. He seemed to have an MB OEM supplier that he sourced the leather from. I can try to get the information for you.

Cheers,
Drew

Spring Auto Upholstery
Aurelio Rodriguez
(713) 398-5041

I’ve used him for 25 years for various vehicles. He does a good job with mimicking factory patterns and rebuilding. For this car he made the seat covers and replaced the seat padding, fabricated the door panels, and covered the dash all in leather.

Drew, good luck with the auction.  Car looks immaculate.  So which vehicle is next on your list, or maybe you are already working on it?

$243,500!!!!
Way to go Drew. Not only well done on how the car was restored but your responses on the sight were very credible and detailed. A lot of work!  Excellent price for a self-restoration.

Had to show this to my wife for when she complains about my rotisserie restoration!

It's interesting isn't it that quite often "incorrect" details will actually add value to a car.
Buyers are often impressed with bright colours such as the red in this example, not realising that the "correct" colour should be black.
Same for the engine bay where parts might be polished or chromed. It's not "correct" but certainly seems an easy way to impress the less well informed buyer.
Congrats on achieving a great price.
A word of caution though:
To anyone not familiar with lifting their car on a hoist as in those pictures, three out of the four legs are placed in the wrong position and would likely result in damage to anything other than a perfect shell.

Agree 100%...
I would never lift my new car like that and damage the freshly protected and painted floor
I have my own method.. see attaches photos..

BTW Anyone willing to import my SL and sell it on BAT?

Sead,

Did you manufacture those lifting pads?  If so, put them on the commercial forum and make $$$!  If you bought them, send us a link.   :)

Drew,

Did the high bidder complete the purchase? I just saw that person failed to pay for their other auction win and thought of you and your car. It's evident how much hard work you put in the car, so hopefully everything went smoothly.
