I am only seeing the whole recliner part with the long chrome tube these plug into and lever listed on the various sites with diagrams of seat parts. Does anyone know the part number or if they are available?
-
these were never fitted from factory.
regards
Sead
-
Oh..., they were.
Those are at least included (attached) to the new backrest release lever rod.
I think ... I believe to remember my (280) seats have them too.
I go and check this weekend ....
There is no separate parts number for that stopper - unfortunately ....

Thanks Achim,
Unfortunately one of my seats has them at both ends and the other seat has lost them at both ends 🙄

You may go on a search journey: https://www.google.com/search?q=knurled+pipe+plastic+plug+10mm&tbm=isch&ved=2ahUKEwi0w6W71oiFAxXH5gIHHfmCDLIQ2-cCegQIABAA&oq=knurled+pipe+plastic+plug+10mm&gs_lp=EgNpbWciHmtudXJsZWQgcGlwZSBwbGFzdGljIHBsdWcgMTBtbUjvSVDBClj8OXAAeACQAQCYAV-gAfoFqgECMTG4AQzIAQD4AQGKAgtnd3Mtd2l6LWltZ8ICBBAjGCeIBgE&sclient=img&ei=hOX9ZbTxH8fNi-gP-YWykAs&bih=1018&biw=2346&prmd=ivnbz&rlz=1C1GCEA_enCZ884CZ884

During Pagodafest Chicago, Hans pointed these out and we did find them on a couple of seats and missing on others. My 280 does have them.

Maybe this?

My car was delivered at the factory with these plugs. Chassis 007749, February 1969. Still there after 54 years!
-
The Porsche ones do look promising!
Will have to grab my tape measure - Pawel thought they were 10mm not 19mm 😁
-
Sadly the Porsche ones look perfect but are double the size. The Mercedes one is 10mm at the plug end (13mm on the knurled outside) The Porsche ones are 20mm it says for a snug fit in a 19mm hole.
-
I did not know, the 10mm was a shot from the hip.
Here is another search direction: 100mm bottle closures.

You can also 3D print them.
-
…Or steal them off someone else’s at a car show ;D (Just kidding)
I get the idea of 3D printing them but have no idea how you’d go about it.
-
Just took the Pagoda out for a run, and had to look if i had these plugs, i have one missing, so now the hunt is on, i'll let you now if i find a source
-

Go to the local 3D printing shop, show them picture of the original and give dimensions.

Well I just checked and all four of mine are missing. Never knew they existed.

Ersatzteilbuch Ausgabe B shows nothing...
-
I also checked and am missing one. I’m in the hunt too. Bob
-
I just looked at mine and both seats are missing just the inside one. I'll join the hunt...
-
We need to get one of these plugs to someone who can 3D scan it for 3D printing. We'd probably have scores of orders.
-
Uggg... missing three out of four!
I guess there is an outside chance they fell into the abyss (under the seat). It is not easy to recover anything that gets under there... but they probably would have shown up when I redid the carpets.
Wishful thinking?
-
As with a lot of things on these cars, we were all blissfully unaware that we were missing these plugs, and now we're desperate to find the correct ones, i must have googled 1000's of these damn things over the last couple of days and none are quite right, why can't we just accept something similar, who's ever going to know?
-
Good point BobH. Unless you are showing your car at Pebble Beach, no one will even think of looking to see if you have the correct plugs. Now with that said, our local library has a 3D printer. I will check to see if one can be printed there. Don’t know but will give it a try to cu see if they can duplicate one.
-
I am missing 3 of the 4. The fact that so many have these plugs suggests they were an actual part, even though they are not shown in the parts manual.
-
Thanks all for your responses and sorry for seeming to have opened a can of worms! 😂
I think Pawel’s original suggestion of 3D printing makes sense, but I have been looking for local businesses to me in NYC and finding it not as simple as all that - several request that you provide the file for printing, which suggests a need for a middle step of putting the dimensions of the plug into some sort of CAD program - I have not found a service offering to ‘scan’ one of the plugs.
As Rodd said, it looks like there would be plenty of demand, and I do wonder what people with the 200k beautifully restored cars have found as a solution? Someone must have found a supply of these or indeed 3D printed them before…
Hopefully with so many now looking for them, a solution may be found!
-
I have one out of four remaining so have arranged to post the one remaining to a guy who has done some 3D printing in the past and get 4 printed. I never even noticed the bungs before but now I know they are missing I need to get get them, I guess its our passion with these cars

Maybe I was lucky, but when I wanted to re-create Varta battery cap, I had one that I gave the studio to scan. I found them in Google maps, "3D scanning and printing nearby".

I've got some samples coming to me in the UK next week, if they're any good, i'll buy some, they only come in batches of 1000, so before anyone spends a lot of money printing them, let me see what the ones i get are like, happy to post them anywhere if they're any good
-
I do not know if I have them in the car, have not checked yet, but I want them regardless :). Thank you for it.
-
Hi Bob,
I am in the UK/Guernsey and would like 2 sets of these plugs if they work since I would like one for each Pagoda
Thanks
Andrew
-
Thanks Bob,
I look forward to hearing how the samples look 😁
-
Was at ACE hardware store today and saw white nylon plugs in 10mm. Perfect fit.
-
hi Robert,
were the ace hardware plugs in the bulk parts shelves or individually packaged?
I would like to get some, can you share any packaging or part / item number
thank you in advance
Merrill
-
Thanks Robert,
Would it be possible to get the ACE hardware SKU number for these?
Any item they sell will have a SKU so they can track inventory- Having this number would likely allow any of us to order these from ACE or at least ask for them at our local store.
-
I checked my car and noticed it only has these covers on the driver's seat. This was not something I thought about two years ago when I replaced the worn MB tex upholstery with a well-preserved used original leather upholstery. Let's hope I can find these plugs here in Sweden or Europe.
-
And this folks, is why I say I'm in the 44th year of my apprenticeship.
Until this thread popped up I'd never seen them before!
-
I'm only missing one of four, and "frankly my dear, I don't give a damn". ;)
-
I'm missing them on the passenger seat.
I MUST HAVE TWO MORE SEAT FRAME PLUGS IN PROPER MATERIAL, SHAPE, AND TEXTURE!! MY LIFE IS IN TURMOIL WITHOUT THEM!!
Darn you, Richard! ;)

I agree with the above, Richard, very insensitive of you.

Samples arrived this morning, i had to modify them slightly, the ribbed top was slightly too deep, so i cut a slice off and filed it to neaten it up. The waist is slightly bigger than the original, so i cut two slits in the sides so it contracted enough to fit, pictures are below, see if you can tell which is original and which is new
These are the closest to the originals i could find, if i spend any more time looking my wife will book me into therapy

Love it! Our education never ends.

ok Folks,
these are at Ace hardware, bulk parts cabinets
.50 cents each.
i picked up 4 and turns out that there was one already on one seat. (guess i have an extra)
hope this helps

Trying to find them on line...

Merrill, Benz280,
Those will plug the holes, protect you from scraping your skin on a metal edge. But, they don't look like the original. Don't have that textured edge.
BobH,
Very, very close to original. Doesn't your wife know to just ignore you?
I believe scan & print is our best option.
-
I have a few of these samples left, if those who would like them could conform how many they need, then i'll order a batch. If there's enough demand i thought i could send a load to the US and then they could be distributed from there, it would be cheaper than me posting them to several different addresses, particularly if you end up paying import taxes and fees. If there are any takers in Europe or other parts of the world, let me know and i'll sort something
Thanks
-
To Mtoomey
Hello Mark, can you please message me with your address, i've tried sending you a message but your inbox is full
Many thanks
Bob
-
hi BobH
if you send a batch to the states I'd be interested in a set.
thank you
-
Ill take a set also.
Can you post a photo of the one's you have .
Thanks
-
BobH plugs do look more like the originals once he did the modifications. I am sure that there will be members in USA that would want more of the original look. However if you vs are comfortable with the ACE, yes they are in the bulk parts Ben’s. Bob

Vintage Euro Parts is a company that likes to find vendors that will make parts if there is a market for them. Based on all the people on this post, I would think there is the need. I would contact them and see if they can make the parts.

I have a batch to send to mtoomey (Mark), but i can't get an address for him
If i send them to either Merrill or Benz280, will you forward some onto Mark when we get an address for him?
Thanks
-
I found one original plug on the passenger side. Those found by BobH are a very good match, you just need to gently cut off the "collar" and, if you see fit, shorten them a bot form the collar side with a knife. Then they look like original in my opinion.
Side question: I wonder if those plugs were installed on the outside of the chairs or also on the inside? I would not be surprised if it was only outside - you basically do not see the inner side of the chairs in that place. Always a saving to leave them unplugged...
Anybody found them on the inside of the chairs (in original chairs)?

Pawel, I found one chair that had both - The passenger seat with the kinder seat behind it. Whereas the drivers seat had neither. Impossible to tell but my thought was that maybe they got knocked off on that side as it is the only one that gets tilted forward frequently to put things back there. The kinder seat is so pressed against the back of the passenger side that it is rarely moved and so the plugs were 'un-interrupted'
Of course anyone could have moved them at any point too!
I don't personally think Mercedes would have only put the plug on the outer side - taking the seat apart, everything is so carefully repeated on the recliner mechanism with more springs than are needed to be functional - they could have saved more money there than on a plastic plug :)
-

See my reply 7 above. My car came from the factory with the plugs inside and outside.

Thank you!

Hi all, I have received my plugs back from the 3D printers and they turned out to be a pain in the bum to get right with the colour texture and shape, but they did a great job in the end. If there was enough interest they could print off 100 at a unit price of £7 Plus P/P. Seems dear but they have to hand finish them.
-
These look great! Not sure how to organize that though!?
-
What was the price for you to just order a couple? Even if rather high it might be simpler to each just put in an order for the number we need with your printer - at least now they have the template so to speak!

Put me down for 4. Are they a proper fit? Just asking because the ones from Ace were the wrong size!
Thanks!
Tony
-
That was my worry, but they fit really well
Ill see how much it is to post to the US as I am in the UK.
-
The ones Bob H sent me fitted really well, and look very good in situ
Bob, thank you once again !

Those look nice!
Granted, I’ve never dealt with a 3D printer shop but I’d think you’d be able to get the files from them? If so, any chance posting them in the tech manual 3D printed parts section? Might be easier to just have them printed locally rather than shipping around.
-
I can ask on Monday. Sounds a good idea
-
I would be interested in 4. Put me down on the list.
-
Stumbled across these when i was looking for something else, if anyone is interested
https://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/256484120277
-
Thanks Bob! These were crazy expensive with shipping to US or UK but looking at the pics against my original post, they look very good for size and could be the same one supplied with the larger reliner part as the seller suggests.
I jumped on ebay.de and bought them locally as with shipping to a friend in Germany it worked out at a total cost of $10 a plug which I could stand to pay lol - I can also stand waiting till December when I next head to Europe to pick them up!
-
Thanks to Bob H, I bought these on Ebay in Germany and sent them locally to a friend. I finally picked them up in December and am pleased to say they seem a perfect fit and I have replaced all 4. I've kept the factory 2 I had left which are slightly shorter in the tube (possibly just from wear) in case they need to be used as a reference for 3D printing in future!?
-
It is possible to give the link to the eBay seller or the make/type number.
Thanks
-
Sorry Peter,
eBay no longer keeps listings viewable for long so when I click on it, I’m bounced back.
The seller has ID: thomasjj2
They’ve sold 488 items in the last 25 years with a 99.2% positive rating on eBay which would for me put them in the category of a proper vendor not a bulls**tter 🙂
-
Thanks Richard, maybe I can find him with the information you provided.

Hello Peter, this was the original listing, seems like the seller has nothing listed on e-bay at the moment
https://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/256534129495?msockid=19739b0715786dc218c08e5314c36c06
just found a new seller though!

If you have no luck, i still have some of the plugs i bought that need modifying, i'm happy to send you some if you can't find any originals
-
inching ever closer to completeness, thanks for the tip Bob. no one will ever see these, nor will they understand the satisfaction of finding these and putting them on... but thats not why we do it, is it?
-
That's right. :D
-
A more recent listing...
https://www.ebay.com/itm/205286995334
-
yeah for anyone interested, these fit great and look great!
-
EBAY cost: $32.59, at that price it goes "below the line" in need
-
$35 AUD for me just for the plugs and $43 shipping.
Must be sending them business class
The joys of living so far away from the rest of the world.
Hard pass for me.
-
The part number is 0009973320. Two survived in my car, so I needed another set. Unlike the others pictured mine were not opaque but rather black. I purchased them from George at Authentic Classics. Around $3.50/plug.
-
I am afraid the white/clear/white-ish caps in question do not have any part number as they came together with the seat frame, as part of it.
Part number A0009973320 is a rubber plug 11mm used in our cars (as well as in many other cars, also today) in a couple of places, e.g. to plug holes in the floor, rear part, but not for the seats.
-
All 4 are missing on my 280SL. (In garage)
It is 8 degrees so I cannot see if my 250SL is missing them.( Outside)
Rodd, you are correct, is someone made them up there will be a ton of them ordered.
Tom M
-
And what was the color ? Clear or black. ?
-
They were clear.
I received mine and they fit perfectly and quite snug with no modifications.
