Title: rpm in 5th gear
Post by: Alex D on August 11, 2024, 00:48:54
Had the Tremec T5 5 speed transmission conversion done a few months back still getting use to it.  At 55-60 mph in 5th gear I am barely at 2,000 rpm flat road nice cruising speed.  Is that too low a rpm to be in 5th? Seems to be running fine, no lugging.  Just not use to such low rpm after years of normal 4th gear high rpms at 60+ mph.

Any thoughts?

That seems to be more inline with modern engines. Torque range is somewhere around 2,800 to 4,500 for our engines and ignition timing is fully advanced around 2,900 RPM. Cruising along at a steady road speed probably wouldn't do much harm but 2,000 RPM at 55 MPH seems a bit on the low side to me. What is your 5th gear ratio?

With the ZF 5-speed box (an original option), 55 mph at around 2,500 rpm and 65 mph around 3,000 rpm. In this range, you can easily accelerate to change lanes without downshifting.

Hi Dan,

Hope you are well these days.  5th gear ratio is .63
