I am totally new.
I just bought a 290SL that has been in storage for almost 20 years.
Do I need special fluid for Clutch and Brake cylinders?
Specific things I should do or NOT do trying to start it after 20 years?
Would it be a 4 speed or a 5 speed?
Thanks

My bad: It is a 280SL--it is a 1969 but a 280SL.
Thanks.

Hello and welcome. Congrats on your purchase
If it’s been sitting for a long time, clutch and brake fluids are the last of the fluids you should change.
The post linked is a very good summary of your steps… but check the engine turns (by hand) before you get too carried away.

As for 4/5 speed. Statistically the probability is it’ll be a 4 speed.

..It all depends what someone has done to the engine. If, for example, it received an oversize bore of 88mm, it could be considered a 290SL....just kidding ;D ;D

That's a good thread to read, not just that one post. And yes, always put a wrench on the front of the engine, spark plugs removed, and turn by hand in the proper direction.
