How do you separate the black winding knob from the chrome piece?
Is drilling out the rear the only option?

I believe the plastic knob is either riveted or swaged in place, meaning there is no easy way to remove it without drilling.

I see the chrome is pretty bad on the handle. You’re probably better off just replacing it. It’s going to be a lot less money and effort.

Yep the knob itself is not meant to be replaced. This style of handle was used on many Mercedes sedans of the era and should be an easy find used on ebay. A new replacement from Mercedes is only available in the later larger knob version.
