Hi all.
Does anyone know what this piece in the trunk is for?
Thanks in advance

I think it is for the luggage strap.

But I noticed, in my 250 SL anyway, there is no attachment on the inboard side, the back of the top well.

That is for sure for one end of luggage strap. Should be another in trunk floorboard at the back bulkhead

Lag a lag, what is the tag hanging down from your luggage strap?

Attached is a pix of what I did.  While I believe the strap was a standard color, I choose to match my car.  I made the pins from sailboat clevis pins as they were stainless.  Feel  free to comment and chop up my try for baggage straps.
My straps were made from extra large belts

Obviously the luggage is not proper

I made my luggage strap pins from a 1/4 inch diameter socket wrench extension, (already chromed except for the ends once you cut it to length).  The belt, I bought cheap at Canadian Tire (also inexpensive at K-Mart or Walmart).  I riveted the folded over belt ends with "hammer-together" rivets that I bought at a store that sells sewing supplies.  I actually made It twice.  I first sewed the ends (shown elswhere on the site), then remade it with the rivets because the sewing looked "cheap".

Thanks to you I found the other receiver for the strap at the rear.  I was looking on the floor rather than up higher.

Love your car,
What a brilliant paint,
I have a plan to paint my car, i think its similar signal red, due to the restriction in California, there is no choice to paint lacquer and i am looking to find a good shop in terms of the quality and price out of the state.
I hope you enjoy your wonderful car at its best.
Cheers

My early 230sl w/vertical spare tire has a receiver for a 2nd luggage strap at the top right of the trunk well (see pic). There's not a receiver in the trunk floorboard at the rear bulkhead for this 2nd strap - but it might have been removed by a previous owner.
Since early 230's had vertical spares, they could accommodate a 2nd strap. Anyone with an early 230 have both receivers for a 2nd luggage strap?

Sorry for not been back on this before. The tag is from the supplier of the strap, Gusti Leather, kept it there to where from i comes, so no important original MB stuff.

If originally the receiver was there, my wild guess would be that it was deleted when the car was worked on - the new floors or other body parts do not come with fixtures from previous models, so they would not have the strap receiver there. From your picture, looking at the beautiful finish, someone might have done work on the car body in the past.
