Title: low risk method to remove a pilot bearing quickly and easily without a puller
Post by: roymil on February 16, 2025, 17:01:12
Since I didn't find anything about it on sl113, I thought I'd share this link to the bread method.  I just used it to remove my pagoda's pilot bearing without a puller in just a couple minutes. Crazy idea, but it sure worked well with no damage to the bearing or cover.

a super short video explains itself :  https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=nkRmKWktW70 (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=nkRmKWktW70)

ha! great idea! I removed a pilot bushing that way a few years back on a small block, but I used grease instead of bread. Bread wouldn’t have made such a mess! Thanks, Charles

I have debated using this bread method, but with a basic inner bearing puller being fairly cheap I would have thought that would be simpler/less messy. Any particular reason to prefer one method over the other?

I didnt happen to have a puller that small and I was also a little concerned about deforming the cover, which I now see is pretty thick, so unlikely the puller would have done too much damage. Using bread was low risk so I gave it a try with great result.

It's always refreshing to see tried and true solutions being passed on the next generations.

I have pulled pilot bearings with a small puller in the past  but this bread idea looks great.
When I pull another one I will try the bread routine.
