Title: Hardlines for opt. oil cooler (M127/M129)
Post by: Jack the Knife on April 16, 2025, 17:09:31
I'm getting around to finally installing the optional oil cooler I bought a few months ago, but I'm noticing I need two more hard lines and two brackets according to Naj's photo posted on here some years ago: https://www.sl113.org/forums/uploaded/naj/2006331112238_DSCN0255.JPG

This would be the long pipe (I believe https://www.ebay.com/itm/225504918774?_skw=oil+cooler&itmmeta=01JRZR1YBK1TFN2KSSWEVJ69N1&hash=item348123fcf6:g:27gAAOSwsjZkJ1nm) as well as the two brackets shown in the first photo, as well as the y-pipe above it. I have seen many such pipes for the M130 motors, however, that one has different geometry. Can someone point me to where I can find the proper pipe? Maybe a part number? Thanks all.

All W108 250SE sedans of that era were equipped with the same oil cooler.

So were many 250S cars. This is where I found all the parts for my car.

Would either of you mind showing me how it is installed in the car? I just consulted Niemoeller's diagram (https://www.niemoeller.de/en/w113/w113/B042/202/d20114-pipe) and I don't see this y-pipe anywhere.

That cross over pipe is routed down to the oil pan where two clips attach it to the front of the oil sub pan. Two oil pan bolts must be removed and replaced with longer bolts with one spacer each. I am going to look through some of my photos to see if I have one showing the set up. You will also need the fitting in the near the back of the block ad the "T" connection for the radiator hose. The rest of the lines are rubber hoses. Of coarse you need the two mounting clips and the longer bolts with spacers. You an consult your owner's parts manual also, if you have one.

I found some pictures of the original 230SL  oil cooler assembly.

And one more.

The tubing goes behind the alternator straight upwards and then it stucks in a "T" piece towards the water pump.

And if you use the 250SE/SL oil tubing on a M127.981 with R11 FIP you get in trouble because the fuel tubing collides with the oil tubing. You have to modify one of the steel tubes.

MANY thanks for the excellent photos, Joe! Really nice engine, too.

Thanks for this, I found the T-pipe around online (P/N is 1272000184, $77 or so through SLS) as well as the y-pipe from the M129-series cars (P/N is 1292000084, cheapest price I found was $187 on eBay).  SLS refers to it as a Kühlwasserrohrverteiler. Thank goodness for them, as other sources wanted between $400-$600!
