I have a question that was put to me by the owner of a restored 1966 230SL. He poinnted out that that oil dip stick had the model 220SE stamped on it. Is it possible that this is not correct and that somewere down the line his oil dip stick got switched.
I would like to hear from owners of 230SL on this question, as to weather a dip stick exsist for this model that says 230SL?
Thank You

Hi, Bob,
I have the same dipstick (with air filter on handle) on my '65 230SL and it is correct.

Someone used an earlier oil pan maybe. I'm pretty sure by '66 they had a simple wand with a looped handle on the end. Crank case air filter type is used on first two or three years at most.
I'm sure someone knows.

Hello Bob,
Yes the 230SL dipstick does have 220SE stamped on them.

Yes, I agree but I don't think that every year had them.

I have a '65 230sl, and the dipstick is like the middle one in Naj's picture. It even has the remains of red paint on the handle... but it says '230/250' on the stem. But my car was originally made for Germany-- I wonder if that matters..?

Hello WAQAS,
I think Dan is onto soomething here. The type of dipstick changed along the way. The change was not confined to model change (230SL, 250SL, 280SL ) but happened within the models.
Don't worry about having the right dipstick, the length and diameters of their tubes changed along so only the correct one of the three will fit.

My dipstick is stamped "230/250" & is of the "middle" configuration.

Thank you all for clearing up this question.

Oil dipstick with 220SE was used until Aug of 1965 then changed to omit the vent and filter.
