Title: missing BBB pages
Post by: bjudd on December 27, 2005, 19:34:33
my BBB ("starting 1968") is missing 54-3 to 54-10.  Is anyone up for scanning or copying and sending me these pages?

thanks

Which is why one should watch for the old BBB's on ebay.  They had all the info.  The newer Edition ones are terrible..
I see them come up once in a while .. they are usually a little beat, but I much prefer a beat up one with all the info than a new one
that has been info chopped...

this BBB is dated August 1970 &  printed in Germany.  Since I have a 54-12 to 54-18 and some of its pages were loose so I presumed these pages were missing.  54-12 is a section on instruments and they do not match the instruments in the 280 - completely different style.

I purchased my BBB direct from MB years ago & there is no pages 54-3 to 54-10. Gernold at SL Tech can probably get you the chrome piece you need. He got me the one that fits on the right side of the center piece.

Hello bjudd,
I have four various style and year BBBs and none have these pages. They may not exist.

Even the older 1959 book doesn't have these pages. I have no 54-3 to 54-10.  It skips from 54-1/n (on electrical leads) to 54-11 (on r/i of instrument cluster).

Is there something specific that is overlooked there you are looking for?

yes, Chad.  I am looking for info on dealing with the whole dash/instruments/heater lever replacement, etc.  I've got the tac, speedo, radio out.  How does one get the glove box out?  I've removed about 6 screws and it's going nowhere.

thanks

Glove box removal ought to be straightforward - removing the six screws (3 top and 3 bottom) does the trick on my car. It may need some coaxing, e.g. if the MB tex has become attached to the frame metal. Then you push it out from the inside at an angle.

Both of these are in the "as of 1959" BBB, not in the "as of 1968" BBB.

I've had the dubious pleasure to get a few of the loose-leaf editions at various revisions.  The history of the Big Blue Book is kinda like so...

- First copies appear in 1 binder in 1960, give or take.
It is very thin, with the minimum tasks needed to service the car at that time.  For instance, there is nothing for the rear end, since it shouldn't need service.
- First binder is quickly filled at or about revision 9.
- 2nd Binder is filled by revision 20.
- Revisions are published to #40.

- A special single binder edition is republished at revision 38.  This big book starts full and gets revision 39 & 40, most of the time. This special revision is missing about 8 sections, including the Hydraq intro.

- A paperback is printed that covers most of the missing sections from the single binder.

- This paperback is reprinted a zillion times. Each printing looses quality of the pictures.  I am not aware any paperback revision having more pages than any other.

- For each of handling a 2 volume paperback appears. I've not handled it, so I don't know what's in it.
