Only obsessive compulsive pagoda people would notice the millisecond of a Pagoda pulling up in front of the Greek casino in the Bond flick "For Your Eyes Only". I need to get a life!

Another sighting .( I think )

A couple months ago I saw an odd little flick entitled, "The Door In the Floor" starring Beau Bridges and Kim Bassinger. She drives a green 280 that the producers tried to make look dowdy. You get to see more of Kim Bassinger's body than the body of the car but it's almost as attractive. :D

You must watch the 70's hit "Breaking Away". Pagoda plays a prominent part. Filmed at Indiana University...where I live half the week. I wonder if the locals associate me with the bad guy who drove the pagoda and wears Lacoste shirts...like me... Oh well, no one's beat me up yet...
-
I can't remember the name of the movie, but I saw this movie a long time ago with Richard Gere playing the lead character: where in the end of the movie he crashes a really nice silver 280 sl pagoda...what a loss..

Mark,
We discussed that movie at length here:
http://sl113.org/forums/index.php?topic=2283
It's called "Intersection." I always thought it woudl've been a better ending if the doctor informed the next-of-kin about Gere's accident, then gently inquired about whether they would consider selling the wreck to him for parts.....

There are two older movies where a pagoda car was quite visible. In the sixties, when the pagoda first appeared, a movie starring Audrey Hepburn and Richard Burton (I think) call 'One For The Road' featured a white 230 SL. In 1979, a movie with Bo Derek, Julie Andrews and Dudley Moore call '10' had a 280 SL that was driven by Julie Andrews.
I too try to spot old cars in movies and actually watch old films just to see old cars. Sam

Sam - actually that movie was "two for the road" and I can defintitely recommend it.

The main character in the "Highlander" television series drove a pagoda. Every production year of the series was filmed half in the US and the other half in Europe. The pagoda was featured in the episodes filmed in Europe.

I thought we had made a "sticky" for movie sightings, but I cant find the thread now !
Anyway in the current "Starsky & Hutch" film a Pagoda appears, white with dark roof, just as the "baddie" played by Vince Vaughn tries to escape in his grey W108. He pulls onto the road with the Torino in persuit and we catch a glimpse of the tail of the W113 !

"Two for the Road" starred Albert Finney and Audrey Hepburn. The movie covered various eras of their romance and marriage. Finney plays a London based architect with a wealthy client on the Cote d'Azur. They drive a rhd 230SL through France in part of the film. Finney also drove an MG TC, D or F which eventually catches on fire and ends up in a pond in France. A great film.

The 1971 TV series "The Persuaders" starring Tony Curtis and Roger Moore features several shots of pagodas, heckflosses, and other MBs of the late sixties, scattered over the entire series. The main characters themselves drove nice cars -- Tony Curtis in a red Ferrari Dino 246GT and Roger Moore in an orange Aston Martin DBS. Would be nice to have such a sweet lifestyle...

Haha, another movie with the pagoda in it.
Anyway, I just bought "Two for the Road" and "The Door In the Floor" last week from Amazon. I'll be watching them this long weekend.
I saw the trailer for "Breaking Away" and it seemed interesting so I bought a dvd on ebay too.
This is crazy. Hopefully the movies are good so I wouldn't feel bad buying all these "pagoda" movies.
Joel, I just bought a DVR - DVD recorder yesterday. I'll see if I can put together a dvd with the pagoda spots. But wouldn't you rather watch the whole movie?

I will not vouch for how complete the listing is, but check out www.imcdb.org. You can search by make, model, contains, equals to. etc. Very cool indeed. There was a single page article about this site in the October 06 issue of Hemmings.

I just tried again, and went to the home page, and then at the bottom of the screen was a listing of the various automobile makes. I was not requested or required to log in? I clicked on the MB link and got about 70 pages of references. According to the article in Hemmings MB was the third most sited make, behind Ford and`Chevy.

I was able to watch "The Door In The Floor" over the long weekend.
It was a good movie but quite depressing. It seems all the movies I've seen that feature Pagodas have owners that are dysfunctional or depressed. I guess things went downhill after Oddjob.

Regarding "The Last King of Scotland" it is actually very funny, because my pagoda was first sold to somebody in Centralafrica, not far from Uganda. So maybe my pagoda has been involved in a similar carchase, with mad goverment-hired-killers with guns chasing it. BEcause it is such a brilliant handler I imagine it escaped safely...i.e. it has no visible bulletholes....;-)

So, while watching Hannity last night, an MB commercial came on. Ends with a new model car crashing through the Classic Center window I think. Glimpses of all sorts of earlier Benzes -- and I may have seen a Pagoda at the very end... Anyone else see that commercial?
-
More than a few times. It's the new E class commercial, and a good one at that! Shows a number of classics highlighting the MB heritage.
-
I've seen the commercial several times--but try as I might have not seen a Pagoda...maybe someone with TIVO can do it is slomo and see it?
I did notice the disclaimer as the new E-Class goes through the glass to "take its rightful place" next to the rare and exotics that the drive through the glass was simulated! :D
-
Well, right at the very end as the Black car spins into place -- I may have spotted the tail end of a light mint green or silver 113 on the far left.
(You're right Peter -- I need to get a life!) ::)
-
Just saw it - it looks like a silver with hardtop in place in the back left at the very end of the ad.

I saw it too. Had to rewind to make sure. But what is the crash through the window all about? I guess I must be getting old. I could'nt understand the VW adds for the last 10 years either.

In the hopes of spotting a Pagoda I watched a Robert Redford movie "Downhill" circa 1969. He played a US Olympic skier in which training as well as the event taking place in Zurich. I was unable to spot one. :( The movie itself wasn't too bad.

Just to take up some space here and to enjoy a quiet moment:
So Hauser, your report on this Topic which is Pagoda Movie Sightings is that you watched a movie and did not see a Pagoda? Do I have that right? I guess things are a little hot and quiet for you in Florida in Mid-August.
Well, maybe this will start a trend where we can all post a message here about each film we see that does not have Pagoda. Then by some loopy logic, we'll know that a movie not listed either has not been seen or has a Pagoda in it. Am I on the right track here?
No, here's a better idea. We can start a Topic: Pagoda Non-Sightings, or maybe Pagodas I Have Not Seen. We can messages about films, magazines, TV shows, shopping malls, daily trips, to report that we did not see a Pagoda. Not bad, huh?
Jusy kidding Hauser, always good to hear from you.

On Wednesday night this week (9-23-09), I happened to catch a little bit of an episode of a 1967-68 TV series, "It Takes a Thief" on RTV (Retro TV). The star, Robert Wagner (impeccably dressed), drives up to the east steps of the National Gallery of Art in Washington, D.C. in a dark color, top-down, 113 sporting Bosch headlamps. He got out of the car, talked to a confidant, and walked into the Gallery. Great shot of the car driving up: low camera angle, gallery on the left, U.S. Capital building off to the right; not possible to do today with all of the D.C. security stuff around. Sorry I missed title of the episode and the last 20 minutes where I suspect the car reappeared.

Ever since we spent spring break in Scotland my wife has enjoyed watching TV shows about it. Well she brought home a DVD set of 'Hamish McBeth'. In the epesode 'Great Salt Robery' Hamishs' old girlfriend comes back to the small town with a new boyfriend. He's driving a 280sl. light blue. Hamish gets pretty jelious and kick's out the head light. He's the local police so he gives him a ticket. Later he kicks out both headlights and another ticket. Pretty funny. Anyway, the guy and girl drive off in the 280 waving goodby. Several very nice scenes with the car. A little rust around the front headlights too.
I was not able to figure out how he managed to get the headlights fixed the next day. Seems like those would take a bit longer to get. Especially in the highlands of Scotland.

Sorry Michael,
I must have been sleeping since... :(
In August last year you mentioned something about the German movie "Baader-Meinhof Komplex" ...
and now I am reading your posting.
Yes, you are right. The Baader-Meinhof gang, called RAF (Rote Armee Fraktion, Red Army Fraction) was the top terrorist gang in Germany in the 1970ies and 80ies.
Andreas Baader, Gudrun Enslin and Ulrike Meinhof were their founders and members of the first generation.
They were responsible for quite many murders of officials and politicians in those years.
The three committed suicide in prison in Stuttgart-Stammheim in 1976 and 1977 when attempts of their terrorist colleageus failed to press the liberation of these prisoners by other terrorist's acts, mainly the failed hijacking of a Lufthansa Boeing 737-200 in Mogadishu, Somalia in Autumn 1977.
I was a young teenager in those years, it was terrifying to watch the results of their "actions" on TV by then, horrible.
Why do I tell you that ...? You are bored ...?
Well, Ulrike Meinhof's husband (Klaus Rainer Röhl) owned a ... eh?
Yes, a Pagoda..., you are right !!
Well, at least in the movie, which you (Michael) mentioned. The white car (most likely a 230 form what I could see about the rearview mirror) was only visible in two or three short scenes, but it was there!
I don't know however, whether Röhl had a Pagoda in his real life. He is still alive, maybe he still owns the car... (don't believe so).
One of the last victims was the Head of the "Deutsche" Bank in Frankfurt, Alfred Herrhausen, who lived in Bad Homburg, a wealthy town near Frankfurt.
And Alfred Herrhausen's last home, Ellerhöhweg in Bad Homburg and the crossroad, where he was killed by a bomb attack, Seedammweg, is only about 2 or 3 miles away from my current home Friedrichsdorf (by far not as wealthy as Bad Homburg) and close to my today's jogging terrain (Bad Homburg forrest)
... weird !! :'(
What's the essence about this story? :o ???
It comes all about and with the pagoda ...
In either case, the pagoda of Ulrike Meinhof's husband and my very fine parts car never had anything to do with those terrorist's acts. ;)

A little bit off the main topic...
During a recent trip to India, I spotted a rather nice looking pagoda in a TV advert for HipHop Sunglasses.
Appears to be a red 280SL with whitewall tires and most of the advert is centered around the car.
Was quite refreshing considering that one does not often see any old Mercs in India in general...
-
I know this movie has been mentioned before but we rented "Two for the Road" last night and I highly recommend it to those who have never seen it. I first saw the movie when it was released back in 1967 and didn't realize at the time that a 230SL was one of the "stars" (along with Audrey Hepburn and Albert Finney). Needless to say I loved the movie and when I came out to my white 250 SL (my 280 SL's predecessor) after the movie, there were a group of people gathered around the car. I think they were a little disappointed when Audrey or Albert didn't show up :) The movie is a little dated (aren't we all) but still fun to see our favorite car on display.

I like seeing old movies with cars that appear to be new. At that point in time, they were new. I don't like seeing movies where these "new" cars get destroyed. I saw an old movie a while back where they rolled a 1960 300d Adenauer. Made me sick. And then there's the Witches of Eastwick movie where Jack Nicholson destroys a 600. They used 5 or 6 different cars in that film, and crashed the wrong one!! I got to go inspect the car and write an estimate on it. Dang that was a long time ago...

Watching a made for TV movie on HBO called "Cinema Verite" and at about the 45 minute mark there is a nice shot of the two stars, Tim Robbins and James Gandolfini, driving down the California coast in a blue 280SL. Several more scenes show the car through out the rest of the movie.
John
-
Yes I saw Cinema Verite as well and a Pagoda is featured. The movie is about the making of the first "reality" tv show, the PBS documentary about the Loud family back in the 70's. The sl is featured to the extent that in one scene after Robbins character has been kicked out of the house he is speaking to one of the kids on the phone and asks if "Mom has been driving the Mercedes?"

Now you guys have me doing it. . . in the 2010 film "All Good Things," the rich family drives a Mercedes or 3. Sadly, can't say I enjoyed the rest of the film, but hoping to catch another glimpse of the Pagoda at least kept me awake.

On a plane yesterday I picked up a magazine and found an ad for Wempe (ask your other half) which had two models sitting in a silver 280 (I think...) in front of the Brandenburg Gate

Looks like a Pagoda will see some action in the remake of "Tinker, tailor, soldier, spy".
Only a couple of seconds on this trailer about 50 seconds in,

Nice! I also saw a Citroen DS at the beginning, the other car I love (I own 2!) besides my W111 Coupe and Pagoda.
I will definitely go and se the movie.

Last night, on the television CBS Police drama "Blue Bloods", the police enter a "Brooklyn chop shop" and lo and behold--a great view of the "280 SL" badge on screen. I guess it was supposed to be a car in for "chopping". Quite unusual...except for Tom Collitt whose Pagodas have visited chop shops many times, I think...
Blue Bloods is filmed in New York City.

Probably among the most obscure yet. Page 60 of the latest Esquire Magazine(November 2011 Rihanna cover) Under visual rule #126 there is a drawing of a couple watching leaves from a 113.

Daughter came home after watching the movie " Monte Carlo " at the local cinema.

Does anyone watch 'Blue Bloods' with Tom Seleck?
This past week near the end of the show they commented on some bad guys
keeping something in an old convertible stored in a warehouse someplace. Well
the two cops go to search the place an the convertible is a 280sl all covered in dust.
Not much on air time but pretty cool.

This just in today on the Mercedes news wire...
Mercedes-Benz Recognizes a Film Icon in Motion
Hollywood’s love affair with motion is not exclusive to pictures, but also with the wheels belonging to the iconic Mercedes-Benz SL, which has played a role in over 150 movies and television programs in its lifespan not to mention fame on studio lots and the streets of Tinseltown.
The legendary SL, for a span of six decades, continues to be one of most iconic and desired cars in Hollywood. Its first role was garnered in the late 1950s and now has reinvented itself with a complete redesign for 2013. Each model of the SL franchise over its 60 year history has made multiple appearances on the silver screen starring in many notable films like High Society with Grace Kelly, Frank Sinatra and Bing Crosby and The Rookie with Clint Eastwood.
This Academy Awards season, Mercedes-Benz is commemorating the SL anniversary by supporting film restoration through a contribution to The Film Foundation (www.film-foundation.org) in addition to creating an SL vehicle retrospective and an exclusive reveal of the 2013 SL to be seen by those attending Mercedes-Benz annual invite-only Oscar viewing party at the Soho House in West Hollywood.
“We’re grateful to Mercedes-Benz for its support of The Film Foundation,” said Executive Director Margaret Bodde. “The foundation is committed to restoring and preserving as many films as possible. We want to make sure that movies, which are such an essential part of our cultural heritage, are still around for people to enjoy — not just today, but far into the future.”
Between 1958 and 1975, the SL Roadster made 53 appearances in feature films and television programs that starred many of Hollywood’s most talented actors and actresses such as Ava Gardiner and Fred Astaire. Beyond the earlier decades, the SL appeared in cult hits like Beverly Hills Cop, Cannon Ball Run and The Flamingo Kid.
“Classic films are similar to vintage cars in that they are a window into the past, whether communicating society’s aspirations or people’s style and taste during that era,” said Michael Kunz, manager of the Mercedes-Benz Classic Center in Irvine California. “Restoring Mercedes-Benz vehicles is part of our DNA and we take great personal pride and determination in helping keep thousands of Mercedes-Benz classic cars on the road today and true to their originality.”

New(er) movie that I (had) to watch with my wife and daughter.
Monte Carlo...

The guy is some type of prince or something that is supposed to
watch over the star... yada, yada, yada.....
Anyway he drives her around in the pagoda.

French film - Les Lyonnais (A Gang Story in English release)
Full of some very nice early 70s cars including many Citroen DS and MBs (inc a Pagoda), Porsche, Peugeots, Simcas... I wathched parts of it over the shoulder of a fellow passenger on a flight from Geneva the other night
-
Take a look at the beautiful Signal Red 1970 280 driven by Jerry Seinfeld on "Comedians in Cars Getting Coffee." The short film co-stars Alec Baldwin. Just Google the title of the show and the content should appear. Enjoy!

Just watched on HBO on March 28, a filmed in 2011 movie called "Monte Carlo" staring Selea Gomel. Had a silver/cream 230 SL. Many scenes throughout the movie had the Pagoda driving all around the winding roads Monte Carlo, of course with the top down. Even had a scene where the SL drives up to one of the 4 star hotels and the leading man and woman get out of it to go into the hotel. Wow, the doors sounded really great then they shut, thump.

I haven't seen anyone mention, "Tinker, Tailor, Soldier, Spy". A brief glimpse when they go to mainland Europe. Hard to tell the model.

PS. I do love the Citroen as well.
