Title: Ball Joint Removal Tool - Recommendations?
Post by: rogerh113 on September 12, 2006, 13:19:44
Hello,

I need to rebuild my steering relay/idler arm, and to do so I need to remove the 2 ball joints attached to it.  I have an old 'pickle fork' which I don't want to use because the ball joints (and rubber covers) and in good shape and I want to keep them that way.  I have seen some of the lever type ball joint separators (like OTC), and would like to know if anyone has used these with success, and any suggestions as to brand to get.

Thanks -- Roger

Roger,
Have you tried the universal balljoint separation method: Unscrew the nut, but not completely – leave it on for bolt protection. Then, with a heavy hammer give the side of the hole just above/below the balljoint some good blows. Do not try to bang on the bolt it self!
Somebody may think that this is a too violent method on our beloved cars, but it works for me…
