Hello - it should be possible to find a (more) original engine, although you may have to settle for a 280 or 250 SE engine because they are more available than the 230 SL engine original to your car. Search for an M130 (280) or M129 (250) injection engine from a period sedan. The main difference with an SL engine would be the drive for the tachometer, but that can be fitted to the sedan engine.
Here in Europe, and also in the US, there are still a lot of sedan engines available for little money. The transportation should not be more than a few hundred dollars, so if you want to go that way, it should be possible too.
Good luck!

Hello,

The M129 and  M130 mechanically injected engines were used in the W108 Chasis Mercedes six cylinder sedans, some coupes and  cabs. (250 SE, SEL and 280 SE and SEL)1966-1971.

nadavbkk,
e-mail metric motors at
metric@mercedesengines.net

they may be able to sell you a complete motor for a 230 sl.  however, be ready to pay,  a rebuilt 230 sl motor runs $6100 exchange.
add Charge for non rebuildable core items:
Block $600 - Head $900 - Crank $200 if you do not have an exchange

you can see more at
http://www.mercedesengines.net/products.asp?cat=15

maybe you can work out a deal by exchanging your motor

From what I rember of a engine swap I did many years ago fitting a M110 to replace a single cam 6, was that they had different flywheel diameters and required changing the transmission too.
So most likely your transmission will need to be changed back to the original style along with the motor.
