Good thing she has the black steering wheel and not the ivory. Easier to hide chocolate fingerprints. :-)

Tosh,

Saw that at the weekend - you beat me to it! Very nice ride.

Also, the Pagoda (and the R017 and the other newer gopping SL and SLK) are on the front of Classic Car magainzine this month. They've done an 11 page article on which SL is best. You won't be surprised to learn that the 113 wins, although as a 230 owner I don't support their conclusions about the 280!

So which one of us "lent" their car for this shoot.  Did they tell you they would be using fake rain?  I don't think so...

To be fair, they concluded they were all excellent and classy rides. Just that the W113 was the most classy 8)

Mike,

It's a UK rag that I don't think you will get in the US. It covers 11 pages, but much like women's magazines that tell them how to loose weight and get a better life over 20 pages, it can be summed up in a few sentences:

1. SL's are 'classic' cars. (Apparently this includes the wretched post-107 SL, whatever model that thing is). This includes the SLK, although the original 4 cylinder 230SLK compressor (which I owned) is largely crap, so don't bother. (I agree).

2. The older the car, the better. This means that the 300SL gullwing is top of the heap. (No S&*t!). Work backwards from there.

3. Some SL's are more desirable than others. Thus, of the 113 heritage, the 280 is deemed 'better' than the 230. This is due to 'improvements' made over the years, such as all-round discs, drilling out a 2.3 litre block to a 2.8 and so robing the engine of its ability to cool itself, etc.

4. W113 280's attract a significant premium over other SL's. (This turns out to be 10% later on in the article and I suspect it has a lot to do with what Chelsea Classics charge - this is a UK company that sells more 113's than anywhere else in the UK; they are only really interested in 280's. They are sort of market makers in the UK, or London, at least. They don't have a great repuatation. 'Nuff said).

5. All SL's will appreciate with age, and the 107's seem to be the best bet for now. The 500 SL is the best within that range, and the 450 SL stinks. Or so they say.

Basically, it's a 'get six pack abs in 5 minutes whilst drinking more beer' article. If you've read my 5 points to a more successful motoring life, you've missed: nothing. And you've saved the equivalent of $5 cover price.

Cheers!

James, I agree with your zipped version.  He Who Must Be Obeyed brought this superficial article home; for 17,30 CHF (about $13!!!)--a real fluff piece at half the price.  However, as my daily driver is a 500SL and my Carling is a 280, I can feel virtuously chuffed, which is how you are supposed to feel after eating spun sugar...  and I liked the adjective for the 107 ("Dallasty") because I can kid my sister about her car now.

Oh, Thoroughbred & Classic Cars!  Time for me to pay a visit to Borders or Barnes & Noble, who carry it in our area.  ;^)

Seeing this magazine cover reminds me that SLs, particularly the 300SL, seem to be all the rage as cover material all of a sudden.  The most recent issues of "Classics" (used to be "Practical Classics?"), "Classic & Sports Car," and Hemmings "Sports & Exotic Car" all sport a 300SL, and now "Thoroughbred & Classic Cars" has a trio  of SLs on the cover.

I will bring the magazine with me to work wednesday. I picked it up at the news stand in my neiborhood. On the cover is a 113, 107, 129 & slk. You really cann't miss it. Its an English magazine.
Their were some very interesting points with the discription of each model. What to look out for when you buy although it was not the long list just the short list. It seems the early SLs never go out of style. I guess it was because the most difficult part of the early SLs were the fuel injection pump. Other than that it was a car build from sedan parts off the shelf.
How ever anything not sedan part related and be prepaired to go on an eating diet.

Mike,

In the UK, I am beginning to think that all the classic magazines have in fact been taken over by the Aston Owners Club

Either that, or this site has been!  Back in February the link to the magazine showed the March issue, with the three SLs on the cover.  Now it seems the Aston Owners Club has managed to slide an Aston Martin in there!  ;^)

.........better the Aston than the ubiquitous E-Type which I grew son sick of seeing on the cover of that Mag !

In fact I cancelled my subscription purely for that reason !

Resubscribed again though !!!
