Title: 5 Speed Gear Box
Post by: Garry on April 09, 2008, 17:49:58
I have been offered a zf 5 Speed gear box for my car but the part number is 117 261 1201 and I am uncertain if it is suitable.  I have not been able to find anything on the net,

Anyone know if that is suitable.  It was on a 108 3.5 but I believe it was swapped out to that car from an unknown source.

Garry--the ZF 5 Speed that will fit the 113's is the ZF S5-20. This same model ZF 5 speed transmission with a different shifting mechanism and other mods was used on several Maserati models of that era as well. I do not know of any other ZF 5 speed transmissions used in the MBs of that era.

Hi, this is not a ZF box, it is the G76/5-MB Box for V8 engines.
ám still looking for one!!!!

If you want to make a 5 Speed transforametion I would succest this:
- Getrag 265 Box-BMW E9 5-6-7-series ´80
- Adapterplate (i finisced allready the form, I can make others if you want- Watercuted 20mm steel- 4 x 2 holesin 10 mm (M10)
- Speedo-dreive adapter (about 120 Euros)
- W111 fintail -kardan-to cut
- 2 metal adaptation-plates for teh 2 BMW Bushings
- Pilot-guide in the flywheel to reduce diameters.
- Simple 2 stainless stells guides for the gearschift-lever

Thats it, the best- AMG-Dortmund (Laufer) did the same in the late ´70!

If you can provide me the adesse of the G76/5 owner

Thanks both Pagodino and George for that information.

I want to fit the 5 speed ZF as my data card shows that the car was originally built with one but has had it changed to a four speed sometime over the years so am on a hunt for one anywhere in the world. The info on the ZF S5-20 will help and I am told that Italy is one of the most likely places that I will find one.  I am going there on 6 May to stay for a couple of weeks staying near Pisa so will be on the look out for one whilst there on holiday.

Pagodino,
The one I have located here in Australia with that part number is in Queensland and the Wrecking Yard was asking $1000 Aust Dollars for it.  I have a number for the person but no email address at this point.  I am happy to get one for you if you are interested.

Let me know and I will ask for the email address.

Best wishes
Garry

The PO may have swapped it out either because of the non-availability of critical repair parts or because it was an easy way to make some substantial cash. The ZF S5-20 boxes are very difficult to come by and when they do surface, they command a high price.

Yes Garry, it looks indeed as if the photo depicts a ZF S5-20 box, suitable for mounting in a Mercedes

It's your lucky day. I have one so I kind of know a bit about them.
The part number you have sounds like a 107 280SL number. I'm not sure what the 5 speed box part number from benz would have been.
Only about 850 113's had these. They were also used on  108, 109 and some 111/112 coupes/cabs.
MB has one of three 300SE Cab's ever produced with a 5 speed. I'm sure it's worth a fortune.

Garry - I recently purchased a ZF S5-20 with all other parts to convert from 4 speed in NewZealand after searching the world for a long time, makes a 280sl a good cruiser.

Thanks Gary,

Have looked at these before when last time listed.  Made him a lower offer that was not accepted.  Also discussed with Dr Benz, Dan and agreed that it would be just as hard to find a bell housing as getting the innards only on offer here.  Also the hardening is a complete unknown.
