Title: Two fan control questions

My 250 SL has a fan switch that works fine, but it's lose.  I have two assumedly easy questions:

1.  How do you get the knob off?  Pull hard?
2.  Why doesn't my knob light up when on and lights are on?  If I look at the center of the knob, there appears to be a small dot as if it were something that would show light, but no light.  Even in the dark.
