Title: Hub Caps
Post by: 717-113 on May 25, 2008, 20:57:24
Hey,
I was thinking about getting rims off a 280sl, it might be a 1970. Anyway it has the one peice hubcaps. I wanted to put the 2 peice caps on the rims, can this be done? I was looking in the tech manual, and the 2 peice caps fit on 3 studs. can these studs be added to the rims? Or do I even need them because from what I thought I read, the later 230's/250's rims didnt have studs. Thanks

I believe some folks have taken the late '70s 240D/300D alloy wheels (which took the 1-piece hubcaps) and added the pins so they could use the 2-piece hubcaps.

Hello, Jon,

have a look at the two grey rims in the wiki article:

http://www.sl113.org/wiki/pmwiki.php?n=WheelsTires.Rims

The first one has a '113' number stamped on it and has the 3 small hub cap studs.
The second grey rim (108 part #) with the 3 'noses' is the same as used on my 280 SL but will also take the 230 small hub caps.

Hope this helps

Hello,

The first W113 rims had pins for the separate hub caps. the latter had a stamped-in nub to recieve the separate hub cap. Latest versions with the round holes had no recievers at all. You must add to this type. All versions will accept the one piece wheel covers.

The sought after alloy dish wheels (used on W123 cars after W113 production) also have the holes and will not recieve the small separate hub cap unless you add recievers.
