Title: Subframe mount covers?
Post by: scoot on May 26, 2008, 13:56:04
I'm confused about the subframe mount covers (see attached photo).  I bought a 250 SL very recently and it was missing one and the other was broken, so I bought 2 from the MB Classic Center @ $20 each - 15%.  I have seen new and used ones on eBay for more, but that's a different issue.

My confusion comes from having not seen these installed on other cars.  This includes 2 cars at the Mercedes Classic Center in California, as well as the $75,000 230 SL that is the subject of some criticism in a different thread.

Why do people not have this part installed on their cars?  My only guess is that someone decided it trapped water and served no purpose.  Comments?   thanks, Scott

Hi Scott. Not sure of the cut-off but they are an early 113 feature (possibly 230SL into early 250?). I have 'em.

The subframe covers are only original for earlier cars...280SL's did not come with mount covers as far as I know...not sure when they were eliminated.

When I purchased my car they were already there so I have kept them in place.  I actually like the finished look as opposed to being uncovered.

I wouldn't hold the Classic Center up as the benchmark. They get details wrong all the time. Mind you, their cars are nice; they just fall short when it comes to the nitty gritty.

Interesting thing about these covers is that I've never seen them in sedans of the era (although this is purely anecdotal). However, sedans had the rear shock mount plastic covers in the trunk, which the pagoda's never had. I've always thought of this as odd.

Another note on the Classic Center.  They have been very helpful every time that I called and asked them a question.  What I found interesting is when I called and asked for details on how the black paint was painted on the front left and right sides, behind the grill area and also the dash area, they told me to refer to this site...  They also told me that when they restore 113's, they dont brush on the black paint, they spray it on.

Sort of ashame that they dont follow the original build process on certain items...

My early 250SL had them when I purchased it in '84 (from 2nd owner that had purchased it on a lease return a year after it sold originally).. and still has) them.... watch out you don't lose the clips though.

I have a 70 280 SL, I have one cover on the left side that looks old/original? and was thinking about getting one for the right side since it has none but if I understand what I read below maybe I should not because they don't belong on a later model 280 SL.

Am I understanding that correctly?
