Hello All,
I'm in the search for an SL to buy and I came across a couple of Euro version cars in the US which appear to have been converted and have speedos in Miles instead of their originals in KPH. I would need to find some information on how/where to get a working speedometer for an SL in KPH. I'm not sure if all models (230, 250 and 280) share the same speedometers and if they are hard to source.
Could anyone tell me where I could find these?
Thanks,
Andres G (Still on the research stage)

Ask the Mercedes Classic Center...they had some Euro instruments the last time I spoke to them.

check with palo alto speedometer, they may have one

On ebay Germany they have sticker that are applied to the face of the speedometer. I guess this is a cheap simple fix.

I considered this, but the downside is that you then have km-speed but odometer records miles.

Anyone have the links to Mercedes Classic Center and Palo Alto Speedo?
Thanks,
Andres

111 Coupes use similar speedos. I have several of this type. I never throw anything way.....

Andres,
One thing has to be taken into consideration.
Yes, the speedos are different :? . Not so much between KPH and miles (with the exception of odometer) but especially with regard to the rear end gear ratios of the cars.
I.e. there was/is each an individual speedo for the 1:3.75, 1:3.69, 1:3.92 and 1:4.08 rear ends. This makes a total of eight different speedos (KPH or miles)for our beloved cars. Most of those (with the exception of the 1:3.75 one) are shared with the Coupés.
You can "convert" the one into the other (I got this done once), but this has to be done by one of the specialised shops listed below since they have the other little gears necessary for the conversion. The speedos are marked at their backside with a number like "1,96"; in Germany we call that "Wegdrehzahl"; don't know the correct English term for that (probably gear ratio of the speedo or so).
My 2 cents: check back with Dan, he can certainly help you out.
Good luck!
