Title: Transmission Rebuild for 280sl
Post by: hk280sl71 on September 01, 2008, 09:41:17
Hi

I am starting a slow restoration of my 71 280sl. I had Metric supply me with a new motor and was looking for a referral for a good transmission guy to go through my automatic transmission. I live in Westchester NY, not that it really matters but closeness is a bonus,
Like Hans at H & R is in NY.

I am sure Douglas or Richard knows someone.

Thank you

Howard Kramer

www.blackforestllc.com  Mercedes experts.  Extensive 113 experience.  I see 113 transmissions apart all the time.

Howard,

If you are an MBCA member you get The Star.  In The Star are three advertisments for transmissions for older MB cars.  The first is European Exchange in Hackensack, NJ. 201-489-7770.

The second is John Olsen in Minneapolis, 612-377-0156; he advertises manual trans only, but my guess is he's got contacts for automatics as well.  Worth a call.

Then there is Silver Star 800-369-6601.  I don't know where they are located; they advertise "electronic transmissions" so might not do older ones, but can probably point you in the right direction.

Bud's 800-942-8444 has auto trans listed on exchange, with an "inquire" note about price and availability.

Usually the advertisements are worth the cost of joining alone.  So, you have 3 sources.

Of course there is always the Classic Center.

when I sent my motor to metric motors they recommended

they are just down the road from the motor re builder so I saved on shipping by sending both in the same crate.

you probably will find someone closer.
