Title: fuel mixture or ??
Post by: james on October 20, 2008, 14:42:21
Hi,
I am having a real problem with my 230sl. It will not take gas without stubbling just off idle.Move past 2000 rpm's it runs great.
I have checked all of the electronic, timing, points, plugs, wires, cap, roto, and have tryed every timing position possible.

It really seems to be fuel related. Also it backfires through the intake.
I have tried ajusting the fuel mixture and this dosen't seem to fix it either.
any suggestions?
Jim

You might check your throttle linkage set up. Mine was out of adjustment and had similar problems as yours. Once I rebuilt mine, those problems are gone.

You did not mention the condenser. Did you renew that?

I did not change the condenser. I will.
As far as the throttle linkage. what do you mean rebuilt?? I know there is a procedure for set them up in the book. should I just refer to that and re-set them all?

James,

read the linkage tour on the website. It's superb and probably holds the answer to your problem.

I'd add that it's an art not a science, and that it took me a few attempts (4) to get it right. But when you get it right, you'll know it because you'll hit a sweet spot.

But there's a ton of other stuff to look at, like points, plugs, dwell, timing, etc. There's a great deal of info on the site that might help you attack your problem. I'd suggest a dose of reading before leaping in.
