Items for Sale / 1970 280SL for sale, 4 spd, red/black
« Last post by twistedtree on April 02, 2025, 10:01:52 »
After a final burst of energy, I now have this car for sale.  It's a 1970 280SL, manual 4 speed transmission, red with black interior, MBTex seats in good shape with no tears.  I have done a lot of mechanical work on it per the list below.  It will make a great driver, or is a strong candidate for a full-on restoration - buyers choice.  The car is full operational, though I haven't put any miles on it due to lingering snow.

As a driver, the car is solid and has had extensive mechanical work done to make it drive well and be reliable.  The paint and body work looks great from 10 feet, maybe even closer, but there are various imperfections if you get closer, notably some floor pan rust in the typical driver side location.  But none of it will stop you from driving and enjoying this car every day.

Only the best Pagodas are candidates for a full-on restoration, and this is one of them.  The 1970 280SL 4 speed is the pinnacle of the Pagoda line, and this matching numbers car is the perfect starting point.  Datacard, serial number, body number, engine number, transmission number, and axle numbers all match, including the various body parts.

Work completed includes:

Front brake rotors, pads, calipers, and hoses.
Rear brake rotors, pads, hoses.  Calipers rebuilt.
New parking brake shoes
New front and rear shocks
New steering tie rods on both sides and center link
New steering damper
New king pins, upper knuckles, lower knuckles, adjusters
New trailing arm bushings
New rear axle carrier bushing.
New rear axle side link bushings
New rear axle shaft boot, solid, not a split boot.
New rear axle bearing and seals
New drive shaft “donut”
New clutch master and slave cylinders, hoses, pipes.
Crane electronic ignition.
New MB original fuel tank.
New fuel pump
New fuel pickup strainer
New fuel filter
New Vredstein tires.
New firewall pad, uninstalled
New bumpers, front and rear
New heater control levers
New heater control light bulbs
New trunk floor pan
New battery

I am the owner as of the last 15 years, and the car is located in East Central Vermont, USA.  Asking $50k USD, and I can possibly help with transportation in an enclosed trailer.  I'll entertain offers, even if entertaining.  Contact me through this site via private message.

A couple of pictures follow (sorry that the hood/bonnet is still removed), and I'm working on a more complete set that I can post somewhere.

Thanks!  I was able to drill out the broken bolts and re-tap threads in the four nuts to avoid your idea of having someone hold new nuts on the underside while I turn the bolts.  It looks like the 'track' does have a flap that could be bent down to replace the nuts as well (from the underside) but drilling them out worked for now.

WRT the play in the shifter: the bushing on the shifter seemed like it was in pretty good shape but I don't know what a new one looks like.  I hope I'm looking at the right thing. I'll look into the bushing on the transmission side.  Im surprised a worn bushing on that side would cause so much vertical play at the shifter, but I suppose it being so loose could cause this.

Unfortunately (or fortunately) I have the original FridgiKing AC so pulling more carpet is going to be tough.

Thanks!

General Discussion / Re: Tracking History of NATO Car
« Last post by IndySam on April 02, 2025, 01:40:30 »
If you look at the data card, under Auftrags-Nr. / Order No., the 1st digit refers the year ordered, the next 3 digits identify the country.  In my case, the 1st digit is 9 and the next 3 are "401" and "401" = NATO Affiliated.  I've seen on a couple of sites that NATO personnel & diplomatic mission members qualify and you need a NATO ID card to prove status.  As I understand it, NATO is one of the few organizations Mercedes has a deal with.  There are also 3 digit identifiers for "TOURISTS EXCEPT US" - 402 and "FOREIGN DIPLOMATS" - 403.

On my original Data Card, the back identifies the 1st owner as a "Capt. Lavoie".  I am assuming he was in Europe for part of a NATO deployment, perhaps with the Canadian military as the car ended up in Quebec.

By the way, I see you are restoring a Mustang with your son.  What a fantastic project that must be.  I envy you on that.

Body, interior, paint, chrome, and cosmetic items / Trunk will not open

Hi,

I have a 1967 250SL that I have owned for 5 years.   It is currently in final stages of being put back together after being painted and it seems the trunk will not open.   I have never had any issues with it and in fact I am not sure I have ever locked it or if I have the key to it!   The button pushes in but it doesn't open.   I have done some research on the forum but I couldn't find a solution.   I did read that Dr Benz has a solution but when I tried to PM him it said his box is full.

Any suggestions appreciated!!

thanks,

Michael
