Engine removal - auto transmission

I have removed the engine from my 1966 230 SL (automatic) and I had - as outlined in the Haynes manual marked the flywheel and the transmission accordingly to ensure alignment. When the I had to put engine back in, the shop which overhauled the engine, had removed the mark on the flywheel, which means that I can't be sure that the engine and transmission is aligned, when I put it back together. Is this a big problem and if so, what to do ?

The only alignment issue that I recall is to ensure that the fluid coupler holes are aligned with the flywheel as you move the transmission into place.  Once in place, you can then turn the flywheel and connect one bolt at a time.  Also, I had drained the old fluid out of my coupler prior to removal, so I also installed 1 quart of new fluid prior to installing the coupler back into place.   In addition I put a small amount of grease on the nose of the coupler prior to installation.

Both the manual and auto flywheels have a dowel pin that positions them correctly to the crank shaft. You should only be able to install it in one place.

Yes, Dan is correct the flywheel will only install one way. The torque converter will install in one of three positions but it is a balanced unit in itself and should be fine in any position.
