Automatic trans: shift link
« on: April 04, 2009, 10:51:23 »
The shift rod that fits between the lever assy: and the auto: transmission has excessive end play in the guide sleeve( SLS linkage and connecting parts #50) has anyone fitted this? What secures it to the shaft and what is its purpose.

Eric, not sure if this is exactly what you mean but the shift linkage rod that goes from the tranny up to lever assembly has 2 small nylon bushings -- one top and one bottom. #48 on that SLS page. It is common for them to eventually crack or perish. The result is maybe slop but more likely, the rod comes off the shaft at tranny which results in no gear selection whatsoever. I suggest anyone who has not replaced these to at least have the parts on hand (they are cheap). Installation tips can be found here -- not too difficult.

By the way, if anybody ever gets stranded because of this problem (rod off the tranny post) -- it can easily be popped back on and simply ducted tape secure so you can limp home)... don't ask.

Hans and James, I am not asking about the nylon bushes,i am wanting info: on the guide sleeve, thiis is part of the Shift Link Rod(look at SLS linkage and connections part #50).
The end float is in this part and if it is not replaced there will be excessive movement at the Gear Lever.
I have used the search function and tech: manual but this item is not mentioned

Not sure what you mean here... The arm itself is attached to a sleeve or bushing type item, No 50 at SLS drw.
This bushing is fixated to the arm via a rivet, see blue arrow in picture below.
Apparently, if you remove the rivet, there is a smaller metal piece inserted there (No52 at SLS): I have not
done this, not been there.

Then a short, threaded part is screwed into the bushing, this is fixated via a locking nut (red arrow)
Anyway, all of the rod is meant to be tight and there should be no "end float" as far as I know

Hans, If you put the sleeve in a vice and pull on the shaft(top left of your picture)the shaft moves excessively,as though there is a spring inside that has lost its tension, therefore giving you the excess end float that i am experiencing.Has anyone changed this sleeve?
