Fuel pump tour (mini)

I needed to take apart my fuel pump to get it working. I figured i'd take some pictures cause everyone loves pictures to reference. I know this doesn't compare to the other tours in this forum, but that's ok.

Eugene, Based on your pictures, I think you've found out why your pump was not running. If the shaft wikk turn now, the armature most likely has not "welded" itsef to the "can". You'll need to clean up that impeller with some abrasive polish like Brasso. You can also use Brasso on the pump body side as well. Make sure you know which side of the impeller faces the pump body. If it goes in wrong, the pump will spin but not pump fuel. Also, while you have the pump out you might as well got the extra mile and take the can off the pump body to inspect the brushes and the armature commutator to be sure. To do this you simply remove the three hold down screws and pull the can off. You should be able to make a good determination of condition of the brushes and comm w/o disaasembling further. In any case, replace the o-ring and make sure the can goes back on precisely the same way it was, otherwise the pump will run backwards. If you need to replace the brushes, let me know and I'll give you some further things you need to watch out for. Good luck

Hello Rodd,
There is no "attach image" button on the quick reply feature, at least on my computer anyway.? I must upload images by first posting the reply then going back in to my post  by hitting the "edit" button, then the "attach image" button appears below!?

Maybe others are also experiencing this difficulty? I thought it was just my ignorance.

Joe and others,

I reply by clicking on the little Reply icon over the individual message I'm replying to.  It looks like a paper with a curved arrow pointing back to the left.  This is the "Reply With Quote" button.  (You can always delete out the other person's quote.)  Below the section in which you type your message, there is a paper clip icon.  That's what I use.

Sphe,  I like your pump! Been there.  I little tip, before you install the impeller and button it up, use some 1000grit on some glass to be sure there are no burrs from handling and cleaning.  Otherwise it may be noisey, hard to start (the pump motor) or it may not move at all.  Takes only about a minute, will likely save an additional disassembly.

I may have my Benz in the Cap district over the summer.  One of my co-workers from up there tells me about a popular corral up on Wolf Road.
