Hi all,  I need some help identifying this part and what it gets hooked up to,,,

That is the oil cooler/reservoir for an early 250SL (230 also?) The connection with the arrow should go into the block (just above that and slightly to the front of the car). There should be another connection on the tank that is hooked to the oil filter housing. That is the way it is set up on my car.

So there is a hose missing, how long is that hose, and what diameter?

Kind of hard to tell, I am guessing 25 to 30 cm. Hose diameter would best be measured directly by the size of the attachment point, 8mm?? The part number for the rear connection from the heat exchanger to the oil filter canister is 127 180 01 27. The longer pipe from the front of the oil heat exchanger to the oil filter canister is 127 180 03 27. Unfortunately the part book does not have the hose size listed or shown.

If you have the small parts book (12128) for the 250 SL, the oil cooler is shown on Table 10 and parts 86 and 87 are the oil lines I typed about.

I looked at the 230 SL parts book and the oil cooler is there, but the configuration for the solid lines to the oil filter are different. The smaller connector appears to be the same.

Thanks, took me a minute to figure it out, didn't realize this car had an oil cooler, and on top of that didn't realize the oil cooler is on the bottom of the engine compartment. makes sense to me now.

I've only had it running for a few seconds, and it ran smoothly. apparantly the PO by-passed the oil cooler.

Be careful - - the PO probably disconnected it because it leaked.   This early type oil cooler was susceptible to fatigue cracks.
