Difference in door between 3 generations
« on: April 24, 2009, 18:24:53 »
Hi all,

I'm searching for a replacement driver's side door for my '71. I've seen 230 doors but from the research I've done it appears there is a difference between the "230/early 250" doors  and "late 250/280" doors.

Unfortunately, I cannot find a source describing the exact differences. One mentions a change in the mounting of hinges and/or other brackets.

I'll likely be using all the interior and exterior hardware from my existing door on whatever I purchase, as it's all in excellent shape.

Can anyone assist with what it'll take to utilize an earlier door? If too much modification is required I'll just hold out for a 280 door.

Thanks!

Rick

The switch on door hardware occurred on the US models mid-way during the 250 SL run at 2980, the hard pockets were replaced, the door opening latch was different and the door pulls. Euro cars continued with the old style panels for some time, but I do not know when that changeover occurred.

As far as I understand it, the door shell should be the same. You can simply reuse all your old interior hardware (like door panel, handles, locking lever, striker, chrome trim, etc), but the door shell is the same.  Of course, each door was hand-fitted to match the body, so there might be some differences in the gaps once you replace the shell.

Also, some folks have mentioned that the mounting holes for the early goose-neck side-view mirror are different from those of the later type. This means that you may need to do some aluminum filling/welding to get it right, before you have the door painted.
