off topic 190SL prototype
« on: February 09, 2009, 06:17:43 »
I've been helping a customer with a project for several years and he has a web site that you can go to to have a look. Altthough I didn't actually work on the car I did a fair amount of consulting.
The amount of rare, NOS parts he's collected and depth of research he did belies the amount of time and effort that's gone into this car. I believe only two were made in 1954 and neither are around any more.

These folks have made tremendous progress on restoring this prototype 190SL. Check out the thread on the 190slgroup.com website. We think we have it bad finding some obscure parts. When you are working on one of one (or two) and most everything changed when it went into production, it is a whole new set of challenges.

The parts he found for this car still amaze me. Some pieces are similar to the 180 sedan but most are closer to the 300 from that time period. The one thing we paid close attention too was that as much as possible be no newer than 1954. Parts from that time period are almost impossible to find in NOS but they're out there. The research was the biggest job of all.

Great project.  Thanks for all the good documentation.  I know a guy who has the doors off of one of the two original prototypes.
