5 speed in a early 230sl
« on: April 18, 2009, 17:49:12 »

I have a orginal ZF 5 speed that I want to put in my very early 1963 230sl
I know offcause its not orignal and that it was first fitted later on in 1966
BUT will it fit without any gearbox tunnel modifications
I think BUT i am not sure that there was a modification made
to make the 5 speed fit

regards

Marek

Hi Marek,

And if you find that you dont want to fit it, I have the perfect 280sl that it will fit into and match the Data Card and am willing to negotiate a price to save you all that hard work and messing about trying to make the non original gear box fit.  ;D ;D ;D

Hello Marek

The 5 speed will bolt straight in,you need the 5 speed remote shifter because of different length rods, also need to shorten driveshaft and rebalance. All fairly straight forward.

Marek .... I don't know if the ZF will fit or not.  There was a change in the tunnel with chassis number 17828 (8-18-66) to allow the mounting of the ZF transmission.

Hi Jim

yes this information I am also aware of BUT what was change !!
I had a look at my early 230sl (chasssi 24) and a 250/280 sl etc I had in the shop ALL manuel set up
I must say I am blind, I cannot find the (tunnel change) that the records refere to in the books

By the way Jim The 190sl number 19 is soon on the road i think 1 month more and we are ready
it seams we have almost the same taste in cars .my first classic was alos a Tartan red 69 mgb 5 spd.
