Astral Silver

Was astral silver an original color on a 70 280?  If not when did Mercedes introduce this color?  Is the color darker or how does it differ?

Thank You

I believe the correct name is Astral Silver and was first introduced into production in 1972 with the W107 chassis cars. I don't think there's much difference, if any, with the Silver Grey Metallic (DB180) Glasurit paint on the W113 chassis, but I could be wrong.

Astralsilber metallic, DB 735, shows up in 1972 by the Glasurit book I have. Silbergrau metallic, DB 180 is oh so very slightly darker with perhaps just a hint more gray.

Just to confirm, in the Mercedes-Benz Refinishing Manual, DB 735 was first used in 1972.

I agree with Johnny B, if you were at PUB 2009 and saw my 280SL Euro specs, repainted in Germany late 70s with originial DB 180, up against several other silver SLs you could see a slightly darker silver with a hint of gray.  Very interesting seeing the difference in silvers.
