What distributor is this?
« on: September 16, 2009, 03:06:26 »

Hello again all...

I've searched until my eyes are bleeding but can't quite grasp what I have here. I have a late 230 (if memory serves me correctly, the last couple of months of production - my file is not available at the moment) - I went to perform the maintenance/oiling of the distributor but don't see an oil cup. The distributor body appears to be aluminum but has no plate or markings I could find.

Also - I've never seen or heard anywhere here about a coil with a brown/tan top...

Any ideas?

Hello,

I think your distributor is a replacement for the early cast iron distributor 0 231 116 046.
The number stamped on it probably ends in 007.

If you car is a late 230, it would probably have a vacuum retard 051 distributor and the replacement for it is an aluminum bodied 009.

Have a look in the 'wiki' under distributors. Vacuum advance and vacuum retard distributors are matched to differing throttle bodies and you need to be sure yours are matching.

Many Bosch coils do have a brown top. The differences are in the colour of the body, black, red or blue. Newer coils all have aluminum finish bodies but the differences are on the different coloured labels. Again, details in the 'wiki' under coils.

Hope this helps.

naj -

Thanks for the reply.

Yes, it is aluminim bodied but i can't see a plate or any markings on it to verify that it is an 009. As it is running fine, I don't believe I'm going to pull the dist off just to find out.

What i am still wondering is where I am supposed to put the oil for the shaft bushings as there is no "cup" or reservoir on the side like you see on the 051?

As for the coil - yes, aluminum as well. I was focused on thinking the body or top would be the red or blue and didn't really pay attention to the label. I'm believing it was black with yellow but I'll take another look soon.

Regards,
Kevin

Hello, Kevin,

I believe there are no oilers on the replacement distributors 007 and 009, only the felt pad under the rotor arm.

Would be interested to know what coil you have on your car.

naj;

I "eyeballed" it (the coil). Red label but I was unable to read the part number.

This must be the upgraded coil (1.8 ohm ballast) for a hotter spark?
