Help identifying this fog light please...
« on: November 04, 2009, 04:58:50 »
I'm trying to figure out what this fog light goes to.  I took it from a 114 sedan, along with another fog light that is correct for a 114 sedan (and possibly a 280 SL).  So I got a mixed pair where I have no idea what one of them is.  The Hella lens that goes in the "normal" fog lamp is a tiny bit too small for this.  And in general it seems a little lighter in weight than the "normal" fog light.  If the pictures look familiar to anyone I would appreciate knowing what this part goes to.   Thanks

Scoot, in future can you please resize pictures so that when uploading the width is no more than 800 px? This prevents people from having to scroll over all the way to the right.

With respect to the fog lamps... I'm confused as to what exactly you're asking. There are driving lamps however, which differ from fog lamps in the glass lens and possible the bulb used. Driving lamps throw a long beam... Perhaps that accounts for the difference? Also, Hella stamps their name both on the chrome back and the lens...(at least on mine they do) do both lamps have that?

I'm trying to identify this lamp - what brand is it, what car is it for.  If I understand you correctly, you are indicating that this is a driving light and not a fog light, and that it throws a long beam, not a short beam.    It has no brand stamped on it anywhere.   (For that matter, my Hella fog lights on my 114 and my extra set that I have on my shelf don't have Hella on the chrome exterior either).    I searched ebay for something that looks similar but found nothing...    thanks.  Scott

The light housing can be used as a fog light or a driving light.  The difference is in the lens.

Sorry Scott, I can't tell what they are, I was just indicating that they don't necessarily need to be fog lamps.  The yellowish glow or glass usually means fog lamps...or French lamps (as they use yellow for main beams also). Or is the yellow from the reflection of the ruler?

If you have no markings on these lights anywhere, it's hard to tell what they are. If they're French, look for Cibie, otherwise Bosch? Hella?  Lucas?

The yellow is the reflection from the yellow ruler.  There is no lens, the reflector is reflecting the yellow ruler.  No stampings or markings inside or out so I need to identify it based on visual inspection / comparison only.

Regarding fog light vs driving light - a poster indicates that the housing could be either and that the fog vs. driving is based on the lens.  Would it not be based on the shape of the reflector rather than the lens?   It seems like that is what is going to affect the beam...

thanks

fog lamps will have a shield over the bulb and driving lamps will have a bulb fully exposed behind the lense. Fog lamps have vertical ribs in the glass to spread the beam over a wider area. driving lamps can have smooth lense or some ribs to concentrate the beam on the roadway.
fog lamps and driving lamps have been made by dozens of manufactures and there are even cheep knock-offs that will have names that look deciptivly like the major brands.
Just because you found a lamp bolted on a Mercedes fender doesn't means that it was an OEM accesory.

Ug.  That was not helpful.   I'm not saying that it is an OEM accessory.  It looks old.  It is chrome.  I'm wondering if it is old and if it goes to something.  I already know that it doesn't go to a pagoda.
