Source for rebuilt ATE front calipers?
« on: July 26, 2009, 22:04:42 »
Past posts suggest that rebuilt ATE 2-piston front calipers can be found for around $70 each.  I've spent a bunch of time unsuccessfully looking through these posts for a source, and another pile of time Googling for a best of $130 each.  Might someone here be willing to put me out of my misery and reveal the source(s)?  Also, I'd be especially interested in the impressions/feedback of those that have tried these budget rebuilds.  Thanks!

So, do these budget caliper rebuilds appear to hold up or does experience show they represent nothing more than a quick fix, working properly for no more than a year of two of regular use?  Someone here surely must have some experience with these budget beasts.

Finally got my `68 down outta the rack after two years storage... changed oil... out for quik spin to libation store so I'd have refreshment while changing coolant, brake fluids, etc.

Developed sudden pull to the right on way to store, and then eccessive deceleration while coasting on the way back home. Noticed bad smell as I pulled onto my street, and then noticable smoke as I pull in driveway.

No fire, no leaks, but from hubcap to tire was too hot to even touch. Had a beverage will waiting for smoke and heat to clear. Jacked up the corner, but wheel wont rotate... openned bleed screw on caliper, got steady drip but only slight freedom of wheel rotation. Finally had to loosen caliper from spindle mount in order to create enough room to extract one pad past ridge on the rotor. Then able to completely remove and inspect the caliper, which was rust bound on one of the disks/pucks and yet impossible frozen on the other disk/puck.

Decided to order this day a pair of ATe rebuilds for US $79 (plus core charge) from German Star out in Az., USA. I'll not report back to this thread unless there is a problem with German Star or the rebuilds... I'm just posting to get my count up, share a story, and point out another source for ATe Caliper rebuilds.

Oh, I checked with my local dealer for the lock plates ($10 ea, 2-days del) and the two bolts that hold the caliper to the spindle... BBB says these should be "refreshed"... the dealer tells me the bolts are US $42 EACH... bloody hell... they wont be "refreshed", they will be REUSED for that kinda money.

Cheers... Brian

I got mine recently from O'Reilly Auto parts down the street . . . they had to order but had them in a couple of days.  Can't remember the price, but cheap.  I got the master rebuiilt there, too.  The rears I got somewhere online.  Can't recall where right now but can probably look it up if anyone needs it.

Hello,

Good idea to replace the rubber  brake hoses if they are more than 10 years old.

Never had to replace those $42.00 each bolts!!!

Perhaps a case of you get what you pay for, so I'm only mildly disappointed in the rebuild calipers that arrived today from German Star... they are remans by NuGeon Auto Components, Inc.   This disappointment is so far only based on the fact that they were not plated... yellow zink chromate or otherwise. I'm gonna install them tomorrow, as I have painted them with a gold colored hammer finish paint, as I'm not so anal at this point to return them and find another source.

The hardware bag with one shows proper plating on the spring and pins, while the other shows no plating. The hardware bag does include the "ceramic lube" for anti-squeal, which is convenient, and the shipment time from German Star was excellent from Az to Mi.

I'll post later only if there is installation or performance problems, but wanted to pass along the plating "issue" for those interested.

Cheers... Brian
