5 Speed gearbox
« on: October 15, 2009, 18:52:08 »
Dear All
I have a 1970 280 SL and want to install a R107 5 speed gearbox. Can anyone tell me which model shall I look for ? ( earlier 107 models ?).

I thank you in advance for your comments and help.

Best regards
Luis

Sorry but I don't think your plan is going to work.
Both models were called a 280SL but they had entirely different motors and drivelines. It would not ba a simle bolt in instalation.
- The shifting linkage is different: sigle rod to the trans top plate(113) Vs. 3 rods to the trans side plate(107). I understand that there is not clearance to fit this linkage without enlarging the transmission tunnel.
- Bell housing diameter is larger on engines, both 6&8 cylinder used in the R107. The bell housing from a side-plate 4speed (w114 chassis) might be modified to make the 5 speed bolt up to the M130 motor, but not sure.
- drive disc flange on tail shaft is a different design.
- a custom drive shaft would have to be made
- rear motor mount is a different design.
_ clutch slave cylinder and throw out different design.

Basicly the later 5 speed 107 Mercedes transmission would require so much modification that it would be about the same as taking a Toyota transmission and modifying it to work.

The only advantage that I could see is that the tranny would have a three pointed star cast into the housing.

The is a 5-speed on Ebay currently, including pedal assy, linkages, etc.... it is a little pricey but not obscene (like perhaps the sunroof H/T)... IMHO.

Cheers... Brian
