Question about Automatic Transmission 1971 280SL
« on: November 26, 2009, 00:50:35 »
The transmission seems to move through the gears normal and smooth. When coming to a stop, as it downshifts to the lowest gear - just prior to a complete stop, there is a clunking sound. Is this normal?? I am the new owner of this car, Need to know if this is to be expected.

Hello,

Harsh downshifts, especially prior to stop are often caused by improperly adjusted engine linkage.  Especially look at the electrical switch adjustment on the venturi (intake).  This switch lowers the transmission modulator pressure just prior to the last downshift.

Go to the "Linkage Tour" and familiarize yourself with the engine linkage, then come back with your questions, so we can help you out.
