We here represent only a small fraction of Pagoda owners, and many "potential" Pagoda owners--those that pine over these cars, know nothing of this site, former sites, MBCA, or other similar clubs and groups that will help a potential "member of the club" navigate the uncharted seas of ownership.
In the past year, I received (as President of an MBCA Section) two separate phone calls from different people who were absolutely enamored with certain MB cars. The one that really stands out was a guy who was hell-bent on getting a 280 SE 3.5 and simultaneously learning EVERYTHING there was to know about them in a matter of a few weeks.
The bottom line was he kind of balked at the completely out of hand, exhorbitant, and outrageous membershiip dues of $45 per year
, but was willing to forge ahead with ownership of a car he essentially new nothing about. It was the same with the other phone call--they were so similar with the same results. Wants to buy a specific model. Knows ZERO about it. Wants to know everything about it post haste. Refuses to join an organization that would help him achieve his goals.
On the brighter side, I met a gent at an event recently. A young German expat, living here in Michigan. He had just bought a 1966 230SL, essentially knowing nothing about it. Luckily he got a good car at a nice price--needs a little work, but overall a good buy. It had the potential of trouble. He did join the MBCA and I did ask him to join here, too. That was one of the lucky ones.
Some person will overpay for this eBay listing as many do for many Pagodas. They are people we never know and a whold Pagoda world exists out there that has nothing to do with us or any other club.
I often shake my head like JonnyB.
