Engine detailing

I would like to detail the engine/compartment on my 1968 250SL, but I am not sure how to go about doing this and what materrials to use.  Any advice would be appraciated.

Do you mean cleaning, or do you mean plating, and swapping out rusted parts, clamps, nuts, bolts, screws, also repaint?  If just to clean, power wash with Gunk to remove grease, oil, etc.  Clean engine bay and engine with Gunk.  Replace all rubber hoses, belts and seals, replace clamps, screws, bolts that are rusted, paint engine block (black) and replace any part under the hood that is rusted or discolored.  Is this what you mean by detailing?

Thanks, Bob.  I didn't know you could power wash with Gunk.  No doubt must be very careful around electricals.  Not a show car but I just want the engine to gleam when I open the hood.

Use Gunk only if you like the odor and are prepared to live with it for a long time.  I would suggest Greased Lightning as a preferred alternative.

You don't power wash WITH Gunk, you mix Gunk according to the directions (there are concentrates as well as pre-mix spray-on); apply according to directions, let it do its thing (soak time) and then power wash it off.

Michael is correct, I meant that you Gunk first and rinse with power wash.  Mean Green as well as Greased Lighting and Awesome (found at Dollar Tree) is good.  Put plastic bags over you electricals.

Folks,
Please think about where all those chemicals and petroleum residues are going to go when you wash them off of the engine.  Nearly all storm drains run untreated into streams and ground water.  Gunk and other such detergents are pretty bad for living things.  Please find an establishment where you can wash it that collects and treats the waste water.  I know some of our members have owned car washes.  Perhaps they can offer some advice.

Ive used Super Clean, and it works great on cleaning parts and stuff. Its a great degreaser and its biodegradable so you don't have to worry about enviromental issues. The only thing about it, watch out letting it sit on aluminum parts and make sure you have the right concentration.
