Replacing the driveshaft flex coupling
« on: February 24, 2004, 18:29:00 »
I'll be replacing the driveshaft flex coupling soon (for the second time, actually), and wonder if anyone can provide a picture or description of how the coupling's bolts and washers are supposed to be arranged.

My copy of the BBB shows an arrangement with recesses in the mating surfaces of the three-pointed flanges, but my car ('69 280 SL) does not have such recesses.  The mating surfaces are flat.  Last time I faked it and arranged things in what seemed a logical manner, but I'd like to be sure this time.

Thanks in advance for any help!

Hello George,
The rule of thumb is that the washer always goes against the rubber disc. consequently the longer bolts have the washer between the nut and rubber disc. The short bolts have the washer between the bolt head and the rubbeer disc. All bolts point forward with the nuts on the transmission side. There are three long bolts (different heads) and three shorter. Pay attention to position of the lip on the rubber coupling (See bottom diagram). the transmission flange should align with the lips on the rubber discs.
