Cleaning interior louvered fresh air vents
« on: November 10, 2011, 22:08:29 »
Started my fall detailing on the car today and always a chore to clean/polish the louvered vents on either side of the dash. I have tried q-tips, small pieces of cloth around Popsicle sticks, and my little pinkie finger:-) They still look good with no corrosion and I want to keep them that way. I have looked at some of the detailing kits in the auto part stores and might give those a try. Any suggestions??

John,

Those vents are really hard to find without pitting from corrosion. After purchasing several sets to try to get a decent set I got the best I can and I use Q Tips with a bit of fine sewing machine oil on them to clean and help stop the pitting.  Not a great way to do it but hopefully stops further deterioration.

Hi Garry
Great tip on the sewing machine oil.  What grade is that,   -100w30 ?   :D

Doesn't have a grade on it , its just Singer Sewing Machine oil, not sure if you get that in US but it is a very fine grade oil.

It appears to be good for putting on chrome items that I may be putting away for future use.  I have got items out some years later and found them to still be good and not pitted which will happen if they are not wiped over with oil.
