Is the transmission shift gate light in the same circuit as the dash panel lights/rheostat or a different circuit?

Yes, but only in the 280SL (and late 250SL) automatic, not in earlier automatic cars.

Thanks for the link. 

I still would like to know if the actual wire circuit is connected to the dash light rheostat or on a separate circuit.  I tried reading a schematic of the electrical but couldn't pick it out. And since the rheostat is out I can't just dim it to find out.
