Joe et al, Can FIP timing be determined without pulling the pump????

Hi Glenn,

I asked Joe that question a couple of years ago...  Here is his reply:

"I may have a way to determine if your pump timing is off without removing the pump.  Remove #6 (rearmost) line on injection pump.  Remove the fitting and the check valve, so you can view the plunger (piston).  At approximately 45degrees ATDC the piston should be nearly at the bottom of its stroke.  So if your pump is set up at O the piston will still be on its way down! "

Good Luck,
Bob  :)

Hello,

Here is another take on the issue. Remove the #4 line (third from the back) of the injection pump, remove the 19mm fitting and the valve, so that the piston can be viewed in the #4 cylinder (third from back) of the injection pump. At 12 degrees after TDC (compression stroke) of #1 cylinder of the engine, the piston #4 in the injection pump is at the top of its stroke. This will tell you if the injection is correct or "radically" set incorrectly.

Make sure you are on the compression stroke TDC #1 cylinder of the engine (camshaft lobes pointing upward roughly). When installing the injection pump,  correct injection pump timing is when the IP is installed with the marks aligned and the engine is at 20 degrees after TDC compression stroke #1(cam lobes roughly upward).
