In order to figure this out, you will need to get the data card that came with the car when built. These are available from MB. There is a specific section in the Technical Manual that details how you go about getting the card, and a detailed explanation of what all the numbers mean, where they are located on the car, etc.

The VIN indicates a car made in left hand drive, manual transmission
113 - type
044 - for 280 SL
1 - left hand drive
0 - manual transmission
011553 sequential body number (from the tables in the manual, produced sometime in June-July 1969.)

The engine, VIN, and transmission numbers are all in their own sequence and would not be expected to match each other.

I recently recieved the data card for my Pagoda from the Classic Center.  You will need to show you are the legal owner and supply a photo ID like your drivers license.  Two days later I had the email returned with a copy of the actual data card and addition information which included the engine number, I would guess the tranny number, original color, material of the interior, type of radio, power antenna and some really cool info on the options. I have suspected since my trunk has the original luggage strap that it came with a luggage set which was confirmed.  I may have to buy lottery tickets so I can shop for an original luggat set..... ;)
