67 250SE Distributor Position Trouble..
« on: June 17, 2010, 04:40:54 »
HI there all ..  I am trying to help my friend who owns a 67 Mercedes 250SE and has had it for well over 30 years...  This car sat for 17 years  . He towed it to my house and I had pulled the fuel tank and had it boiled out .. I put new plugs ,wires , fuel filter and changed the oil... It is not running very well at all. The car wont start unless the distributor is turned all the way counter clock wise.. I checked the wiring and number 1 is at the little notch on the distributor and the firing order is proper 153624.. I wanted to ask if it could possibly be the timing chain had jumped a notch? Any great help would be appreciated.. Thank you so much and this sure is a wonderful site... I hope I posted in the proper place..,marconi.

Hello,

Check the racl on the fuel injection pump to see if it is free.  If you look in the "injection pump tour" you will see where the access cover on the front end of the IP is located. When it is removed you can push and pull on the end of the rack to make sure moves freely.  Next check the WRD it is most likely stuck also. Ask questions if you are not famiar with these issues.

Yes, the timing can jump, but the above issues are much more likely.

Hi Joe . Thank you so very much for your advice. I will look at that and see if its stuck.  I have always loved these cars as I grew up near a Mercedes Benz dealership about 50 years ago.. I have owned a couple of these fine cars over the years and after working on this one it makes me want one .. Bye for now .,marconi

HI Joe and all..   My friend and I had pulled that 10mm bolt off the fuel injection to check the rod travel. We attempted to start it and the rod or rack  never moved to where we could notice it...  Is there a way to clean it while its in place or does the whole unit need to come out? Thank you for any response ,marconi.
