safety switch trouble
« on: July 24, 2010, 04:00:28 »
Hello All - - - -

Today I ran into a problem with the transmission safety switch up on the firewall. This switch prevents starter activation if the shift lever is not in PARK.

As delivered, our cars had no protective boot to seal the exit point on the shroud where the  wire comes out to connect to the ball end joint.

In the case of my car,  this switch had not been connected for many years. This lack of regular movement had allowed dirt and  moisture to accumulate and make its way down between the wire and the shroud.  They were firmly fused together by rust and only after a determined effort and many applications of penetrating oil was I finally able to free them up. The  middle third of the wire was badly pitted, but still serviceable. I opted to lube it with anti-seize compound instead of grease.

Now it's on to the next job in the endlessly tedious task of engine compartment detailing - - - .
