ignition keeps shorting out cant access the barrel
« on: August 04, 2010, 15:57:04 »
Hi I have a 1967 230 SL and I’m having trouble with my ignition. Seems that I have a sort somewhere because it keeps cutting out which is a pain. I have a Haynes manual but it’s for the 280 SL. I have tried to take the gauges out so I can accesses the back of the barrel but have not been able to. I am hoping that if I can accesses the ignition barrel I can fix it. Please does anyone know how I can get to the ignition barrel?????

Sorry to hear about the short.  The only way to get to the wiring on the key assembly is to take out the speedo.  It's a royal pain to do.  Are you sure the short is in the dash?

If it keeps cutting out, you need a new switch at the back of the ign. barrell # 106 in Jeff's picture.

However, the picture is for a 280 Sl and your 230 SL switch looks different.

You can remove the complete ign switch. There is a clamp around it to be loosened. You will see it once the instruments are out. 3 screws hold the switch to the steering lock.

Switch part # 000 462 0693

Hi, again,

Its the running contact in the switch thats probably worn out.
The cranking contact may still be serviceable....

Your local MB dealer should be able to order the parts for you.
The oil pan gasket is made by Elring. If you have a local factor who supplies Elring, he may be able to source one.

What part of London?

to remove guages ( the easy way)
you need someone with small arms and able to twist around.

reach up through the bottom of the dash and unscrew the thumb screw on the tachometer, then reach it through the tach opening and loosen the other instruments, you can simply remove them from the dash. then unscrew the bolt holding the ignition lock, you need to wiggle it out. takes about 30 minutes if its your first time
