230SL E-Brake
« on: March 27, 2004, 13:10:05 »
Has anyone had the good pleasure of replacing the cables and pulley mechanism for the 230SL? I have the new cables and am in process of locating the pulley kit. Just wonder if anyone can offer any input.

Thanks

Hi, Jakob,
My cables were okay, only the rubber end boots have weathered away (new ones cost an arm and a leg unless u can find replacement ones?).
One pulley (alli) was completely frozen to the bolt which was light alloy as well. I just drilled it out and used a steel bolt because I finished the job on a Sunday.
New bolts are still available if required. I may do that in the future when I have to reline the shoes.

Thanks Naj.

That was my plan: to tackle cables when I did the rear shoes. The E-brake cable was in-op for years. Initially, I thought it was just a matter of replacing the rear cables. I bought them for about $55(US) a side. But then we discovered the pulleys were extremely frozen and ratty. And the casing bolts are broken on one side and extremely frozen all around. Proverbial can of worms...

Good news is, if I am reading it correctly, K&K has the casing and pulley kits available. Dan C. if you are out there -- can you confirm this? I'll keep everyone posted.

The 230-SL cars with rear shoes were the last to use the pulley arragement.  These were very prone to corrosion from all the dissimilar metals. I think the Factory replacement pulleys are made from plastic to prevent corrosion.
Later W113 with rear disc brakes did not use the pulley arrangement.
