I recall reading somewhere that this was to identify a certain series of Mercedes cars broader than just the Pagoda - I don't think it was applied to all of the 280 SL's (and to none of the 230 and 250-ies) but I could be wrong. There is a whole series of sedans, coupes etc. that is identified as the "stroke 8" or "/8" or "Strich Acht" (in German).

I think the 8 refers to 1968. That was the launching of a new line of Mercedes. In the case of the W 113, it doesn't totally make sense, but as I understand it, it's somewhat marketing-driven.

/8 referrs to the new line of Mercedes-Benz automobiles including the W123 series sedans that replaced the fin tail sedans of the early 1950 to 1960.

The fall 2003 issue of Mercedes Benz classic had a cover stover on the stroke 8 cars if you are interested in pursuing further.
