Sub frame mount?
« on: April 12, 2011, 01:54:09 »
I am getting ready to change the subframe mounts and noticed there is no metal plate on top of them under the plastic cover.  Is this something that was on later cars only?  The set up looks identical to my 220Sb and my 280 SE 4.5.  Any word of caution I should be aware of before I start?

Hi Brad,
which metal plate are you referring to?
Take a look at this post: http://www.sl113.org/forums/index.php?topic=14056.0
is it #101 or #104?

Brad,
you'll need those for the Pagoda!
Perhaps 'shvegel' might be willing to sell you his spares, or Buds Benz?  See the other topic.
The MB ones are expensive!

All years and models should have the metal plate held to the subframe by 4 bolts. The plate is painted dull black.

A car should not be moved unless both plate covers are in place Moving a car with a missing cover allows the subframe to move.
If the mount moves, the car must be lifted to or jacked up to take all weight off the mount to allow the plate bolt holes to align correctly.

The 230's and early 250's had a plastic cover over each plate. These were eliminated in the later cars. 280's did not have the plastic covers.

Thanks,  What do these plates do?  The mounts look the same as my other 2 cars.  Is the body area different than a sedan that these help reinforce it?  I am trying to find some now.  Apparently these mounts were changed and the mechanic left them off to tighten the center bolt.

The plate limits the upward travel of the subframe so the engine does not strike the hood. Only needed them on the SL. The mounts are identical and the sedan mounts are a lot cheaper without the plates.

How would this limit the travel of the sub frame when they are on top?

The center bolt head where the mount is bolted to the subframe bottoms against the underside of the plate keeping the travel of the subframe in the upward direction limited.

OK,  I don't see that it has made a difference on mine but I am putting them on when I put on the new mounts.  Walter Klatt said he has a pair for me.  Thanks.

Hello,

You may need to get your car airborn to see these plates work when you touch down !
