Just to illustrate what happens if you fail to renew the linkage bush after 40 years as I found out
half way up a mountain in France.
The third picture is the replacement in situ.
The last picture is the improvised tool for pulling the bush into the arm then
with a little silicon grease pliers are used to assemble the two parts.

I recently had the same problem.  I pulled the shift lever from inside the car.  There is a bushing at the top that is the same.  I like the tool idea you have.  It would have saved me some time.

I had previously done the top bushes when I changed the bulb in the shift gate,
thought the bottom bush felt good but got that wrong!!

Mine went in the middle lane of the "periferique" ring road round Paris. Imagine how pleased the French were about that! I did manage to limp it home.
